Samsung Display, one of the primary suppliers of OLED screens to Apple, is gearing up to accommodate the upcoming increase in the number of foldable iPhones, spanning the iPhone Fold and the colloquially called iPhone Flip.
Samsung Display is reportedly increasing its investment in Apple's foldable OLED equipment at its A4 factory
According to ET News, Samsung Display is currently deliberating over increasing its CapEx on foldable OLED equipment for its A4 factory that is located in Asan, South Chungcheong Province of South Korea.
The planned investment, which might materialize as soon as Q2 2026, will reportedly focus on increasing the production capacity of flexible OLED panels by adding additional backplane-related equipment such as thin film transistors (TFTs). In doing so, Samsung appears to be preparing for next year, when the number of foldable Apple iPhones is expected to increase.
Do note that Samsung Display has already established a dedicated production line at its A3 factory for foldable OLED panels to cater to the upcoming iPhone Fold, which is expected to launch in the third quarter. The facility can produce 15 million 7-inch foldable OLED panels per year.
For the benefit of those who might not be aware, the iPhone Fold is expected to sport the following specs:
- A dedicated vapor chamber.
- A passport-style, wide form factor, with the iPhone Fold's primary panel measuring ~7.7 inches, and the cover display measuring ~5.4 inches.
- A 2,713x1,920 resolution, with a 4:3 aspect ratio.
- The inner display will likely offer better scratch resistance.
- Side-mounted Touch ID instead of Face ID.
- A20 Pro SoC, a 12GB RAM, in-house C2 5G modem.
- A 48MP resolution for the rear dual-camera setup.
- An in-display camera with a resolution of up to 24MP.
- A battery with a capacity of 5,500-5,800mAh.
- An H2 2026 launch.
- To launch as an eSIM-only variant.
- Projected price of around $2,399.
- Expected shipments in the first year to vary between 7 million and 9 million units.
Of course, the new investment at Samsung's A4 factory will likely cater to the rumored clamshell-like iPhone Flip. While details are scarce at the moment, the new foldable will likely launch in 2027 alongside the second iteration of the passport-like iPhone Fold and command a cheaper price point.
