Some more crucial information was revealed on the upcoming X3D chip, and as expected, the 9850X3D won't need to have a higher TDP rating.
NBD Shipping Log Reveals 120 W TDP Rating for Upcoming 8-Core AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D Processor
As per a few recent reports, it is already known that AMD is preparing two faster X3D variants of the existing Ryzen 9000X3D chips. These will be the Ryzen 7 9850X3D and the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2, offering higher boost clock speeds vs their smaller siblings, i.e., the Ryzen 7 9800X3D and Ryzen 9 9950X3D, respectively. It appears that there is a variant for the Ryzen 9 9900X3D, since it only offers 6 cores on each CCD, which makes it unattractive for gaming compared to the cheaper 9800X3D.
A few days ago, AMD confirmed through briefly mentioning the Ryzen 7 9850X3D on the official website, but took down the page soon. Today, @Olrak29_ just posted a screenshot of an NBD shipping manifest, which confirms that the Ryzen 7 9850X3D exists, and it boasts a TDP of 120 W. This is the same TDP the Ryzen 7 9800X3D boasts, and there appears to be no change, which is obvious since even it's more than sufficient to handle the additional boost in frequencies.
Even overclocked Ryzen 7 9800X3D can sustain higher clocks within this limit, and the Ryzen 9 9950X3D is the first and only chip to exceed this limit. The newer Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 is expected to break it by bringing a 200 W TDP rating. If you have been following the developments around Ryzen 7 9850X3D, you might be aware that the 120 W TDP was already rumored for the processor, and according to several reports, the processor is bringing a change only in the boost clock.
The base clock will be retained at 4.7 GHz, while the boost clock can touch 5.6 GHz, which is 400 MHz higher than the 9800X3D. The L3 cache will be 96 MB, and the iGPU is expected to be unchanged as well. With higher clocks, it's expected that the 9850X3D will be slightly faster than the 9800X3D in gaming and applications, and of course, it will be slightly power-hungrier as well. But that doesn't matter much since 9850X3D should be one of the most power-efficient CPUs, like its little sibling.
What is unknown is its release date. We don't have any credible reports to confirm when the new processors will launch, but it's possible that we may see them in Q1 2026.
