Beast of Reincarnation will be Game Freak's first non-Pokémon game since 2019's Little Town Hero and may well be the Japanese developer's most mature and complex game yet.
It's set in a ruined future Japan and built around the bond between protagonist Emma and her canine companion, Koo. The studio described it as a “one-person, one-dog action RPG,” mixing demanding real-time combat with companion commands and a heavy emphasis on atmosphere, traversal, and boss fights.

Release Date, Platforms, Pricing
Back in May 2023, we learned that Game Freak was working with Private Division (now known as Fictions) on an action game based on a new IP. The project, unveiled during the 2025 Xbox Games Showcase as Beast of Reincarnation, is now set to launch on August 4, 2026. It is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, with day-one availability on Xbox Game Pass for Xbox Series S|X and Windows PC.
The Standard Edition is priced at $59.99 and includes the base game, the brown Shiba skin for Koo, and 30,000 Amber (in-game currency). The Deluxe Edition costs $69.99 and adds several in-game bonuses, including an Oni’s Hat, the Big Dipper sword for Emma, black and brown Shiba skins for Koo, 100,000 Amber, and multiple vegetable seedlings.
Physical versions of both the Standard and Deluxe editions are confirmed for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, while PC players are unsurprisingly limited to digital storefronts. At the moment, no broader collector's edition or premium physical bundle has been confirmed.

Genre and Setting
This is a third-person action RPG set in 4026 AD, in a post-apocalyptic Japan consumed by a parasitic corruption called the Blight, which infects living flora and fauna, turning them into corrupted beings called Malefacts, while the titular Beast of Reincarnation is directly tied to that spreading contamination.
Emma is a Blight-touched outcast who can wield plant-based powers. At the start of the game, she has no emotions or memories and is treated by the colonies as something closer to a useful corrupted being than a normal person. Koo travels beside her as her partner, and their journey revolves around confronting the Beast of Reincarnation in a world where the remnants of humanity have retreated into isolated mountain colonies built around the ruins of old civilization.
The setting blends traditional Japanese imagery with ruined infrastructure, hostile forests, and supernatural monsters, all orbiting a central quest to hunt the Beast of Reincarnation itself. The official description highlights that Beast of Reincarnation will feature a "brutal narrative where every character hides a dangerous truth", adding that Emma and Koo's fates are intertwined in the narrative.

Gameplay Features and Mechanics
Combat combines Emma's real-time melee action with Koo's command-driven support abilities. One of the game's core mechanics revolves around parrying enemy attacks to build points, which can then be spent on companion commands as time slows, creating a hybrid of action combat and tactical decision-making.
Emma also uses Blight-based powers for traversal and offense, including plant-like or vine-like abilities that let her climb, cross harsh terrain, and bind enemies. Throughout the game's progression, Emma and Koo can strengthen their abilities, raise core stats, and learn unique skills, and the developers encourage players to combine techniques and shape their own playstyle through experimentation.
The main structure centers on exploring corrupted regions, fighting powerful bosses, and gradually cleansing the world by defeating major threats. Game Freak has also confirmed launch difficulty options, including a Story Mode designed to make the game more approachable for players who want the setting and narrative without the harshest challenge curve. Indeed, the developers openly stated that the game is designed to be played by even those who aren't experts at action games.

Tech and Specs
Beast of Reincarnation has been presented as a visually ambitious break from Game Freak's standard Pokémon work, with trailers and coverage highlighting a cinematic presentation, large environments, and a much darker tone. The game is powered by Epic's Unreal Engine 5, promising visuals far more detailed than those seen in Pokémon games.
A recent developer interview confirmed Yui Ishikawa (who previously voiced NieR: Automata's protagonist 2B) as Emma, adding that the wider cast includes emotionally expressive characters with hidden backgrounds and secrets, performed by veteran actors such as Akio Otsuka (Solid Snake in the first Metal Gear Solid game). On the PC side, no official minimum or recommended system requirements have been confirmed yet, but they should be forthcoming given the relatively imminent launch date.
