MSI MAG Z890 Tomahawk WIFI Motherboard Review – A Mainstream Option For Core Ultra 200S Builders

Hassan Mujtaba

Conclusion - Tomahawk For $299

MSI's Z890 Tomahawk aims for the mainstream segment with a solid PCB design that is accompanied by a well-built power system (VRM) and also hosts a great set of IO functionality at a very decent price.

In the performance department, the Z890 Tomahawk WIFI offers solid performance on the CPU side, decent overclocking capabilities, and strong memory support out of the box with up to 256 GB of capacities supported and 9200 MT/s speeds. These are all great and you can expect performance to be on par with the higher-end designs. The Frozr heatsinks do a great job of keeping the VRMs, the M.2, and the Z890 PCH cool. The EZ release mechanisms for the M.2 slots are also great for DIY builders while the EZ PCIe release for the first Gen5 x16 slot is also a nice addition by MSI.

IO on the motherboard includes 15 USB ports including a Type-C on the front which supports 27W power delivery and two Thunderbolt 4 ports. There's also WIFI7 and 5 GbE LAN plus there are four M.2 slots which include a single Gen5 x4 and three Gen4 x4 slots.

The things we loved about the MSI MPG Z890 EDGE TI WIFI:

  • Good Mainstream Price
  • Good VRM Solution
  • Decent Overclocking support
  • Great Memory Support (DDR5-9200 MT/s)
  • Lots of USB ports (Including Dual Thunderbolt4)
  • Four M.2 slots with heatsinks
  • Latest WIFI7 & BT5.4 Support
  • EZ Toolless Design For GPU, M.2 Slots
  • Good BIOS Firmware
  • ATX Form Factor

Things that we would have liked to see:

  • Better placement for CMOS battery
  • VRMs can get a bit warmer than the other options
  • No Digital DEBUG LED
  • No Power On/Off or Reset buttons

At $299 US, the MSI MAG Z890 Tomahawk WIFI is a decently priced option for mainstream builders. The Tomahawk series comes with a great mix of power delivery, IO, and functions, and the Z890 option is no exception.
