Qualcomm may not have expected the ‘less than stellar’ reception of Windows laptops powered by the Snapdragon X Elite and Snapdragon X Plus because there was finally an alternative to Apple’s M-series MacBook models that delivered above-satisfactory performance while offering double-digit battery life. Whether it was the lack of native applications available for this platform at launch, the high starting price, or the quality control issues that resulted in the high return rate of these notebooks, December 2024 turned out to be a better month for Qualcomm statistically.
The latest figures only focused on the U.S. market, but Qualcomm could improve its shipment tally with a new Snapdragon X chipset that targets $600 notebooks
The numbers were shared by Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon during the company’s latest earnings call, with Windows Central reporting that the Chief Executive mentioned that he is pleased with the early reception of customers, even though they are still in the transitionary phase of Copilot+ PCs. Sharing data from a market research firm, Cristiano Amon provided the following statistics regarding Snapdragon X shipments for the U.S. market:
“While we are still in the early phase of the transition to Copilot+ PCs, we are pleased with consumer reception for our Snapdragon X Series, which has exceeded our expectations. According to Circana, in December, Snapdragon X Series had more than 10% share of the greater than $800 Windows laptops in U.S. retail.”
It is interesting that the worldwide figures for Snapdragon X laptops were not shared, and we cannot imagine that Qualcomm’s CEO would not have access to these numbers. However, we would assume that the U.S. is where the premium machines would be purchased the most, and luckily for the San Diego firm, it has found a place amongst alternatives powered by AMD and Intel. Qualcomm intends to shake up the affordable notebook market as well with the release of an 8-core Snapdragon X, which will power $600 machines, in the coming weeks.
For now, if you wish to secure a Windows laptop powered by Qualcomm’s current-generation chipsets, we have some excellent options, starting with the Galaxy Book4 Edge, which offers a Snapdragon X Plus, 16GB RAM, and a 512GB SSD for $782.86. For the second option, you can get the 13-inch Microsoft Surface Laptop, which sports the same SoC, RAM, and storage but offers a touchscreen, for $899.99 after a 25 percent discount.
