While there was a time when the reliance was on saving photos by stacking up photo albums and saving our favorite memories in them, that has now transitioned to a more practical way of storing. Users now increasingly rely on cloud services when it comes to their data due to the instant access and the uniformity it offers in keeping their salient items in one area. However, completely relying on these digital services can also be unsafe since the idea of permanence in this digital age is put into question. Recently, a OneDrive user shared an unpleasant experience of relying on Microsoft alone for storing 30 years of memories and paying the price for it.

A user suffered the consequences for relying on OneDrive for placing the data in its storage service, only for Microsoft to lock the user out of the account

Many people now rely on cloud services to keep data in a single space, but caution must always be exercised to avoid losing precious data. Users should have a backup and look out for activities that can lead to the account being suspended. Recently, an ill experience in this regard was shared as a wake-up call to keep a copy of your data and read the terms of service before resorting to these cloud accounts.

A OneDrive user recently shared on Reddit about an unpleasant incident where Microsoft randomly locked the user out of their account without giving any prior warning or even providing a clear explanation about the move. The user shared how they had uploaded photos that dated back 30 years and represented important life memories, only to be locked out of the account shortly after the transfer was made. The Redditor shared that they wanted to consolidate the files and that Microsoft's cloud services were used as part of the migration process.

While OneDrive was supposed to be the temporary storage facility in the migration efforts, the plan was suddenly distorted when Microsoft made the account inaccessible and wiped out years of personal data in a single blow. The Redditor further shared disappointment over submitting the compliance form about 18 times, only to get an automated response and no proper help, further deepening the deafening silence from Microsoft in this regard. The user shared:

This feels not only unethical but potentially illegal, especially in light of consumer protection laws. You can’t just hold someone’s entire digital life hostage with no due process, no warning, and no accountability. If this were a physical storage unit, there’d be rights, procedures, timeframes. Here? Nothing. Just a Kafkaesque black hole of corporate negligence

Many users have lost their entire life memories by trusting a cloud service solely for their data storage, and such an incident is a stark reminder about blurring lines of accountability in this digital age and the corporate negligence experienced by users as a result.
