With the impressive comeback Nintendo made in 2017 thanks to the Switch console (already well past 10 million units sold), it is perhaps unsurprising that the New York Times would publish an article interviewing Nintendo guru Shigeru Miyamoto, among others.

Talking about the WiiU's disappointing sales, Miyamoto said:

It was a bit difficult for consumers to understand what the system was about.

Whereas for the Nintendo Switch, he specified:

In it, we combined all of the different play styles we’ve explored through our products in the past.

65 years old Miyamoto-san has begun letting the younger generation of designers at Nintendo take the reins. With regards to this year's Switch hits ARMS, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild he served as General Producer, while he was Executive Producer on Super Mario Odyssey and Supervisor on Ubisoft's Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle crossover title.

In the interview, Miyamoto explained his unique approach when it comes to selecting new designers.

I always look for designers who aren’t super-passionate game fans. I make it a point to ensure they’re not just a gamer, but that they have a lot of different interests and skill sets.

This probably helps developers in thinking out of the box. It has definitely worked so far, at least when it comes to the first batch of Nintendo Switch first party games; we'll see how they fare next year.
