Might & Magic

Might & Magic is one of those classic RPG series that has sadly faded into near-oblivion. Originally created by New World Computing, the series' rights were eventually purchased by Ubisoft twenty years ago for around $1.3 million.

However, Ubisoft only made a single new installment in the mainline series in all this time. Titled Might & Magic X: Legacy, it was developed by Limbic Entertainment (later known for Tropico 6 and Park Beyond) and released in early 2014 to mixed reviews. Most of the efforts were dedicated to spin-off games like Arkane's memorable first-person action RPG Dark Messiah of Might & Magic or turn-based strategy games like Might & Magic Heroes VII (also developed by Limbic Entertainment).

It seems like the mainline series might now return thanks to another Ubisoft developer. Twitter user Kurakasis noticed that the French publisher recently registered two domains: mightandmagicfates.com and might-and-magic-fates.com.

Moreover, last year Ubisoft Shanghai was openly recruiting to make a new open world game based on the fantasy IP. Here's the official description of the World Director job opening:

Now the Might & Magic brand at Ubisoft Shanghai is assembling a new team with ambition to reinvent and push the Franchise forward, create exciting new Worlds and genre-defining gameplay experiences, and redefine the meaning of Fantasy gaming for a whole new generation of players.

Join Ubisoft Shanghai’s Might & Magic team on this journey to build up the future of this monumental saga!

As a World Director, you are in charge of crafting the world of Might & Magic. The physical shape, the composition and density of objects, activities, NPCs, etc., all to the service of the best game experience. As the World Director, you will work closely with the Game Director to ensure that the resulting world embodies the Creative Director’s vision and that all components are placed in a way that combines into an engaging and balanced experience.

Ubisoft Shanghai was established 27 years ago. The large studio has worked in a support capacity on many games, such as Far Cry, Assassin's Creed, Immortals: Fenyx Rising, The Crew, Trials, Just Dance, Riders Republic, Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope, The Settlers: New Allies, and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. However, it has never led the development of any project.

It might be a while before we hear anything concrete about Might & Magic: Fates, but rest assured that we'll keep tracking any rumors and noteworthy updates ahead of the official announcement.
