DeepSeek has managed to create quite a buzz and remains the center of attention of every news report, given how rapidly it came to the top of Apple's App Store charts and even shook things up in the financial market. Its R1 model has especially gained massive attention, with OpenAI's CEO even praising the model and calling it impressive. While the cost-effective approach remains popular, it seems like it is already landing in hot waters as both Microsoft and OpenAI are investigating if DeepSeek obtained data in an unauthorized way.
Microsoft is probing if the DeepSeek-linked group is involved in obtaining OpenAI data output in an unauthorized manner
DeepSeek recently released a new open-source AI model called R1 that mimics human reasoning. It immediately took over the AI space in the U.S., which OpenAI, Google, and Meta currently dominate. Even though the model was said to be built at a fraction of the cost of the existing models, it still surpasses the big tech giants, stirring things up in the industry and posing a major threat to current rivals.
While DeepSeek has upstarted an AI wave, it is currently part of an investigation by Microsoft and OpenAI to probe if a DeepSeek-linked group has accessed OpenAI data output in an authorized manner, as reported by Bloomberg. This started when Microsoft's security researchers discovered in the fall that individuals linked to Chinese AI startup DeepSeek had extracted a substantial amount of data through OpenAI's API. While developers can pay for a license in order to use OpenAI's models and integrate them with their own applications, such activity tends to violate the terms of service of OpenAI and could potentially be categorized under data breach.
Since Microsoft is OpenAI's key technology partner and the largest investor, it notified the ChatGPT maker about the suspicious activity that could be an attempt to bypass restrictions on how much data can be accessed and, in that case, is a clear violation. While both OpenAI and Microsoft have not given an official statement on the ongoing investigation. If this proves to be true, it could be trouble in paradise, and the company's rapid success, especially in the U.S. AI space, could be shaken.
DeepSeek has nonetheless created a buzz that cannot be ignored. Even Sam Altman could not resist commenting on the impressive, cost-effective R1 model. While the hopes remain high regarding the company, being involved in controversies like these can truly tarnish the image of a brand if they end up standing true.
