Microsoft Invests Heavily In Artificial Intelligence By Paying Its AI Division Handsomely

Microsoft has fully been onboard on the AI frenzy and believes in constantly working on the technology by bringing forward new capabilities and products. It believes that the workforce that has been working on the initiatives needs to be invested in far greatly for this division to unleash its potential fully. While the company's pay scale has emerged through leaks one way or another over the years, giving us hints on what compensation for high-ranking and low-ranking employees could look like. Recently, a report gave away the salary range for the AI department, and it looks like the employees in the division do not have much to complain about.

It has not been long since a leaked insider poll was making the rounds. Employees expressed concerns regarding the leadership changes that are resisting pay raises despite tough economic conditions, leaving them feeling less motivated and affecting their performance. We have estimates of Microsoft employees' compensations through again leaked payment guidelines that basically gave the base pay range for the lowest performing employee standing at $42,500 with no other monetary benefits. The highest-ranking employee was paid between $231,700 to $361,500, with an annual as well as a hiring bonus.

Now, a new spreadsheet has emerged that is shared by Business Insider, giving us an idea about the pay for the AI division of Microsoft, and it looks like the company is adamant on keeping the employees working on the Artificial Intelligence front satisfied as it is paying them handsomely, especially in comparison to its counterparts. As stated in the sheet obtained, the average salary for a software engineer in the new AI department is up to $377,611, which, compared to the Azure and Cloud division's average pay scale, is far more, almost $120,000 above the other employees.

This leak emerged after Microsoft signed a multi-billion dollar deal with OpenAI to have Azure the exclusive cloud provider for OpenAI and also to use the technology and extend it across its consumer and enterprise products, so it does not come off as a surprise given the heavy investment it is making on this front. Microsoft's growing focus on AI is also reflected in its decision to have DeepMind and Inflection co-founder Mustafa Suleyman take on the division and take the lead with its Copilot, Edge, and even Bing.

The company has also reportedly transferred some employees of the Teams app to Co-pilot projects to enhance and improve the AI experiences. While the information shared in the screenshot should be taken with a grain of salt, it does paint a picture of the pay disparity and conflict employees might feel with the AI division and might ultimately impact their performance. Microsoft's increasing focus on AI and evolving this technology is reflected in its recent ongoing initiatives and the integration it is planning across its product stack.
