An update for Windows Defender broke both the Quick and Full antivirus scans, with the WD only scanning for about 40 files and confirming that "no current threats" were discovered on the device.

"Microsoft Defender AV employs real-time scanning of endpoints, which was not impacted by this update," the company had said in response to the issue. "Only manual or scheduled scans conducted by administrators were temporarily impacted and we are working to resolve it."

Windows Defender version 4.18.1908.7 (KB4052623) apparently introduced this bug when Microsoft was trying to fix another issue that was brought through the July 2019 Patch Tuesday. The problem isn't specific to Windows 10, as other Windows operating systems also appear to be affected by this bug.

The Windows maker has now issued a new update for Windows Defender, addressing the problem. "Security Intelligence Update for Windows Defender Antivirus - KB2267602 (Version 1.301.1684.0)" fixes the problem. If you are still experiencing this issue, there is a workaround of going for "Custom scan" instead of Quick or Full scans to avoid this bug.
