When a company like Anthropic, which currently commands a polar position within the prevailing narrative around AI's uncontested proliferation, mentions its critical supply chain partner Samsung in a positive light, the key purveyors of the industry pay an inordinate amount of attention, with some even concocting fanciful narratives that might not stand the test of time.
We are now in the midst of one such situation, where Anthropic's passing remarks on "logic chips" has unleashed a flood of speculation regarding its possible tie-up with Samsung's fabs.
Anthropic highlights the "critical role" that Samsung, SK hynix, and Micron play "in the global supply of memory, storage, and logic chips," but speculators only see a possible tie-up with Samsung
Anthropic has just raised $65 billion at a valuation of $965 billion via its Series H funding round. Critically, Samsung, SK hynix, and Micron also participated in this funding round as Anthropic's strategic infrastructure partners.
For its part, Anthropic acknowledged the contribution and potential of the trio of memory players in the following words:
"The technology of these companies plays a key role in supplying memory, storage devices, and logic chips around the world."
Now, Anthropic's mention of "logic chips" has captured the imagination of some of South Korea's publications, especially given the fact that SK hynix and Micron do not have dedicated foundries to manufacture these chips, leaving Samsung as the only viable vector.
This comes as Samsung is already courting AMD for its 2nm process after having secured a fabrication order for Tesla's AI6 chip on its bleeding-edge node.
Of course, given the tenuous nature of Anthropic's comments, we would urge our readers to employ a hefty dose of skepticism. After all, the South Korean media had entered into a similar frenzy just a few days back on the prospects of a tie-up between MediaTek and Samsung. However, earlier today, MediaTek's CEO rubbished all such reports after reaffirming TSMC as its long-term partner.
