Marathon has been out on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series for its first weekend, and just like the Server Slam, developer Bungie is doing its best to respond quickly to issues players are noting as they spend more and more time on Tau Ceti IV.
The game's first major update with those fixes will arrive sometime this week, and Bungie is already looking to tackle three of the biggest issues players have spotted with the game. Firstly, and arguably most importantly for all players, you'll be able to know where your objective is for a contract from further away.
Instead of the current minuscule radius of only 10 meters, that radius is going to be doubled to 20 meters. Currently, if you're not within 10 meters of your objective, it won't appear on screen, meaning players are spending a lot of time running around buildings, looking for the one specific terminal they need, unable to find it because they're not getting within 10 meters of it.
When the new update hits, it should be easier to find your contract objectives, without making it too easy and keeping the intended spirit behind the decision to make it 10 meters in the first place, which is Bungie encouraging players to really explore every nook and cranny of each map.
The other two major changes coming in the update will be an increase in the number of med cabinets and munitions crates that spawn on the Perimeter map, and the increase in the base ammo you get in MIDA, CyberAcme, and Arachne sponsored kits.
With regard to the backlash Bungie faced over the current microtransaction economy, Bungie has confirmed that changes are coming "in the near future," but they won't arrive in this next update. The major change is that players will get more LUX (the name of the premium currency in Marathon) for the $10 LUX bundle to give you 1,120 total LUX instead of just 1,100. It's only an increase of 20 LUX, but it's positive to see that any player who bought the LUX bundle and got 1,100 will be gifted an extra 20 LUX so they are not missing out once the change is applied.
Bungie added, "We've seen the rest of your feedback about Marathon's purchasable cosmetics. We want to ensure that when you spend in Marathon, you feel like you are getting great value and discussing ways to improve this experience."
Before release, Marathon was estimated to have sold 250K copies on Steam alone. It hasn't been able to break 100K concurrent players on Steam, but it continues to be one of the top-selling games on Steam and has a 'Very Positive' rating from players in user reviews. It's off to a good start so far, and if Bungie can continue to be responsive to players, it'll likely only continue to grow.
