Loongson has shared two major developments this week which include the launch of its 3A6000 CPUs in the Chinese domestic market and a Russian deal for its 3A5000 CPUs.
Loongson Begins To Ship PCs With Next-Gen 3A6000 CPUs, Performance On Par With Intel 10th Gen Chips
Back in August, Loongson announced the production of its latest 3A6000 CPUs which are based on the Dragon core architecture and now it looks like the first PCs are already being shipped & feature the new chip.
The Loongson 3A6000 CPU which features a quad-core design (4C/8T) and an operating frequency of 2.5 GHz. The CPU uses a 4th Generation Dragon architecture which integrates LA664 cores with support for 128-bit vector processing extended instructions (LSX) and the 256-bit advanced vector processing extended instructions (LASX) along with SMT2.
The PC that the Loongson 3A6000 came equipped with is designed for the Chinese domestic market and includes the motherboard, a power supply, two 8 GB DDR4-3200 memory modules, a 256 GB SSD, and an AMD Radeon RX 580 graphics card. The CPU is seated beneath a standard circular heatsink with active fan cooling while the PCH rests beneath a smaller passive heatsink. Power is provided through an 8-pin CPU and 24-pin ATX connector. The CPU itself comes in the BGA form factor and hence is embedded into the motherboard.
In terms of size, the IHS that covers the chip is about as large as AMD's Ryzen 5000 and Intel 10th Gen desktop CPUs. Performance-wise, the Loongson 3A6000 CPU is expected to be on par with an Intel 10th Gen Core i3 CPU which also offers 4 cores & 8 threads.
In addition to its Loongson 3A6000 CPU for the Chinese domestic market, the company has also signed a deal with Russia which will be procuring the current 3A5000 CPUs. The chips are based on the 12nm process node and will be powering servers. The first batch will include around 100 units and more quantities will be shipped out later. Russia is aiming to shift to Loongson chips for server needs due to the chip ban imposed by the US authorities. The chip ban restricts Russia from buying Intel, NVIDIA, and AMD hardware.
