Foldable smartphone makers with several years of experience are now working to reduce the weight and thickness of their devices to make them easier to grip and use. Unfortunately, the biggest drawback to this design approach is that there is insufficient space to house a bigger battery, but companies have found a way around this obstacle by using silicon-carbon technology. Apple, on the other hand, is not expected to transition to these batteries and is rumored to outfit the iPhone Fold with a larger capacity than the iPhone 17 Pro Max. The only problem with this decision is that it will make the device thicker and heavier.
New rumor that was ‘spot on’ with the iPhone Air’s battery capacity claims the iPhone Fold is being tested with a cell in the 5,400-5,800mAh range
The eSIM version of the iPhone 17 Pro Max features a beefy 5,088mAh battery, and according to yeux1122, the iPhone Fold is currently being tested with a 5,400-5,800mAh cell. Even if Apple chooses to incorporate the smallest capacity from the aforementioned range, the battery will still be heftier compared to flagships like the Galaxy S25 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold 7. The blog post notes that the source providing the newest information also informed the tipster about the iPhone Air battery specifications.
A separate report had stated that the iPhone Fold would resemble two iPhone Air units placed next to each other when the device is completely unfolded. Apple has demonstrated that it can shrink the iPhone Air’s logic board without compromising on performance and make room for the 3,149mAh battery, so there is no question as to why the same engineering cannot be applied to the iPhone Fold. Unfortunately, as mentioned above, the two drawbacks to this approach will be increased thickness and weight.
Then again, Apple is not shying away from making next year’s iPhone lineup slightly chubbier because the iPhone 18 Pro Max is rumored to be thicker than the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Having a few millimeters of thickness is beneficial for the iPhone Fold because it is not just the battery’s capacity that can be increased, leading to an extended runtime. Apple can also leverage the additional internal space to incorporate a vapor chamber with an increased surface area, resulting in significantly improved heat dissipation.
The exact dimensions have yet to be shared, but a previous rumor said that an iPhone Fold prototype featured a 7.74-inch primary display and a 5.49-inch cover panel. Apple could change these specifications when its first foldable smartphone finally enters mass production, and if you want to keep up-to-date on all of these changes, along with the features arriving to the iPhone Fold, make sure to check out our detailed rumor roundup.
