The iPhone Air is an engineering marvel as Apple defied overwhelming odds to deliver a flagship that is both sleek and packs a ton of performance thanks to supercharged internals. What is even more impressive is how the company shrunk the A19 Pro logic board to cover a small area at the top of the device, with the majority of the space utilized by the battery.

However, the decision to make the iPhone Air just 5.6mm thick does not excuse the technology giant for failing to add a second rear camera at the back, which would have brought a ton of versatility and may have even boosted sales. As you might have noticed, the completely opposite reception is going on in multiple markets, as Apple is reported to have slashed production due to virtually no demand.

Thankfully, a rumor suggests that the iPhone Air 2 is being evaluated with two primary high-resolution cameras, but you may have to live with the fact that Apple might not introduce a design change.

Apple could add two 48MP main cameras to the iPhone Air 2, but the evaluation period does not include a telephoto unit

Weibo’s Digital Chat Station says that the iPhone Air 2 might have one 48MP Fusion camera and another 48MP Fusion ultrawide-angle sensor, with the device said to be in the evaluation stages. Strangely, the tipster mentions the model name as ‘iPhone 18 Air’ instead of the second-generation iPhone Air or iPhone Air 2, but there does not confirm whether the number ‘18’ will be included in Apple’s 2026 lineup for this specific device.

The horizontal camera plateau present in the current iPhone Air will be retained, suggesting that the iPhone Air 2’s rear shooters will be placed next to each other in a horizontal alignment. As for why a telephoto unit might not be part of the evaluation, it is possible that the prism and lens hardware were taking up too much space, exceeding Apple’s comfort zone, forcing the company’s engineers to switch to an ultrawide-angle camera.

With a second sensor added to the primary specifications, a whole lot of internal reconfiguration will still be mandatory to squeeze this camera in, including the shrinking of the A20 Pro logic board. According to JP Morgan analysts, the iPhone Air 2 is indeed in the pipeline, with a third-generation version also planned. However, in addition to the second camera, we have discussed how a silicon-carbon battery could have rescued the iPhone Air, so Apple should seriously consider this change in 2026.
