The iPhone Air was always going to be a tough sell because the compromises that accompanied Apple’s slim flagship were always going to break your purchase. The company was reported to make amends by introducing a dual-camera configuration next year but the latest rumor mentions a hardware downgrade that’s probably not going to stick well with the majority of buyers and may not bode well for this category’s future.

Instead of the A20 Pro, Apple is rumored to use the standard A20 on next year’s iPhone Air 2

A rumor on yeux1122’s blog talks about a 48MP + 48MP rear configuration belonging to the iPhone Air 2, and while that’ll solve one of the major setbacks existing in the iPhone Air, there’s a massive downgrade potentially awaiting those eagerly waiting for early 2027 to arrive. Based on the latest claim, the A20 Pro may only be found in the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro, and iPhone Fold later this year as the iPhone Air 2 is said to sport the regular A20.

The rumor suggests that Apple won’t even use a binned A20 Pro, as it did with the original iPhone Air and the A19 Pro. In short, the same silicon expected to be found in the base iPhone 18 will also be the one powering the iPhone Air 2’s innards. Considering Apple’s predicament of facing increased storage and RAM costs, it was probably forced to make this compromise.

After all, TSMC’s 2nm N2 process isn’t cheap, so using the standard A20 could be one way to shed millions in component costs while offering nearly the same experience. However, it’s almost guaranteed that the iPhone Air 2 is going to be significantly more expensive than the iPhone 18, so with both devices sporting the same SoC and potentially the same RAM count, doesn’t the iPhone Air 2’s position seem redundant?

This appears to be the case, and it also looks like the iPhone Air 2 could represent the final nail in the coffin for Apple’s sleek flagship lineup because of this downgrade. Understanding the lackluster reception for slimmer smartphones, the Cupertino firm will probably order the smallest production batch for the iPhone Air 2 to minimize its losses of unsold inventory. Perhaps in 2028, we’ll be greeted by the “iPhone Plus” variants again.
