The combination of a wide-angle, ultrawide-angle, and telephoto camera makes the iPhone 16 Pro Max one of the most capable devices around when it comes to recording footage. Apple has made it its mission to make its handsets the household name when it comes to capturing video, which is why this particular model is the preferred weapon of choice for the Mumbai Academy of the Moving Image (MAMI). This group has jumpstarted an initiative called MAMI Select: Shot on iPhone, where filmmakers can leverage the flagship’s potent combination of software and hardware to produce high-quality content.
The initiative involves veteran filmmakers taking four novice ones under their wing and tutoring them to make content using an iPhone 16 Pro Max, with the help of some tools
Some of the more iconic names in the Indian film industry, Konkona Sen Sharma, Vikramaditya Motwane, Lijo Jose Pellissery, and Vetri Maaran, have shortlisted four individuals, who will receive guidance on how to create content, with a little twist; they will not use any mainstream equipment and instead rely on the iPhone 16 Pro Max. Vetri Maaran says that ‘shooting on iPhone allows for complete personal expression’ and that ‘we’re living in the age of democracy in filmmaking.’
The first piece of work is ‘Seeing Red,’ which is Shalini Vijayakumar’s comedic horror film that uses the iPhone 16 Pro Max’s 120mm lens, the 4K 120FPS option, and the 5x optical zoom to capture a ton of scenarios, such as when recording slow-motion clips, for dotting down tighter shots and more. Amrita Bagchi used the same device to create a psychological thriller titled ‘Tinctoria,’ and it leverages the iPhone 16 Pro Max’s Cinematic mode to track objects flying through the air. The short film is based on the Indigo Revolt, which was an uprising that took place in 1859 in Bengal.
Amrita has praised the 4K 120FPS option on the iPhone 16 Pro Max while also stating that the flagship is ‘like a rocket machine,’ allowing her to breeze through tasks on a tight schedule. Her MacBook Pro also comes in handy when changing the pacing of the edit. Other noteworthy works such as ‘Kovarty’ by Rohin Raveendran Nair and ‘Mangya’ by Chanakya Vyas have been shot on the iPhone 16 Pro Max too, highlighting its prowess as a substitute for those bulky and expensive cameras.
To raise the bar, Apple is said to bring more enhanced camera features to the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, with these additions said to target the vlogging community. We are confident that these upgrades will once again find their place in MAMI Select: Shot on iPhone next year, so we will provide all the updates in 2026.
