The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max ship with more differences than the regular iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus to further justify their premium status. Here is a closer look at all the upgrades you are getting from both models.
iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max Improve Without the Notch as the Pill-Shaped Cutout Now Shows Alerts and Other Notifications
Not only do users get more screen real estate with the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro by the removal of the notch, the new pill-shaped cutout now displays essential information such as notifications. Apple is calling this change ‘Dynamic Island’ and it can also show AirPods notifications, Face ID alerts, and other useful text.
Display Size, Resolution, and Other Details
Like last year’s iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max retain the same display sizes at 6.1 inches and 6.7 inches, respectively. However, the new display can deliver up to 1600 nits of brightness, and up to 2000 nits of peak brightness, like the Pro Display XDR.
As most of you know, ProMotion technology is supported on both models, and the display can actually clock down to 1Hz to conserve battery life. Both models also feature a Ceramic shield, but we will still advise future owners to add more protection, such as a durable case.
New A16 Bionic
The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max ship with Apple’s latest and greatest A16 Bionic that is mass produced on the 4nm architecture, though Apple did not state which manufacturing partner undertook the responsibility. The core configuration remains unchanged compared to previous iPhone SoC launches, as you still get two high-performance cores and four power-efficiency ones.
This time, though, the company states that there is a 40 percent improvement in raw CPU performance, and the new display engines allow the refresh rate to clock down to 1Hz to save battery life. The new ISP also supports the ‘Pro’ camera system, which we have talked about in detail below.
Apple finally upgraded from a 12MP sensor to a 48MP primary sensor, making it 65 percent larger than the previous generation. It also touts 2.44mm microns of individual pixel size with an F/1.78 aperture. The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max arrive with Quad-pixel sensor technology, which is another fancy word for pixel binning. The sensor combines four pixels into one ‘quad pixel’ so the image size remains 12MP, but it features more detail.
A new ultrawide 3x mode is added to the mix, but the 2x option is not optical. Apple claims that it sports ‘optical quality’ thanks to the bigger sensor, but we will find out more details about this. As for Pro Raw, users can capture images at 48MP, with Pro video support up to 4K 24FPS.
Pricing, Availability, and Colors
Apple has kept the pricing of the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max unchanged from last year, as they start from $999 and $1,099, respectively. You also get a 1TB option, though it will cost more money. Apple will begin taking pre-orders for its latest premium range on September 9, with both models officially available starting September 16. These devices will be offered in the Space Black, Silver, Gold, and Deep Purple flavors.
