iOS 18 is all the hype these days, as the platform is set to receive a major boost with AI utilities and visual changes. The new additions are more than welcome, despite Apple lagging far behind the competition as it struggles to release a finished version of the features. It was previously rumored that the iOS 18 would be Apple's biggest update, and the changes would stretch to the home screen as well, which has been the same for almost as long as the iPhone has existed. It is now being reported that users will be able to recolor app icons in the new update.
iOS 18 will bring more to Home Screen customization than any other prior update, as it will allow users to change the color of app icons
One of the biggest changes coming with iOS 18 on the visual front is its ability to place app icons anywhere on the Home Screen. Currently, iPhone users can only rearrange app icons and not create empty spaces, which has sparked disinterest over the years. Not only this, but Apple is also allowing users to change the color of the app icons on the Home Screen with iOS 18. The company's approach is pretty similar to how Android and, specifically, the Google Pixel phones operate in terms of customization.
On Google Pixel phones with the latest Android update installed, users can freely adjust the color of the app icons to match the color of the wallpaper. Google also offers its own recommendations that will match the wallpaper. Potentially, Apple will mimic the same approach, and according to Gurman, users with iPhone models running Apple's upcoming iOS 18 update will be able to "change the color of the app icons."
Apple is gradually making the iPhone open to customization, something that it has been very reluctant to do since the handset's launch. Take note that users can still change the color of the app icons through the Shortcuts app, but having the functionality available natively is a major plus and hassle-free. At this point, we are not familiar with the layout and how Apple plans to implement it, but the change will possibly be available alongside the ability to rearrange app icons. Additionally, it is unclear if the company will allow app icons to change their app logo.
Apple will also update its stock apps with new features, and it remains to be seen if AI will play a part in the color customization option. It was recently reported that iOS 18 will initially label AI features as beta or previews, which only shows the company's position on the AI front against the competition.
