Apple to introduce new AI features with the upcoming iOS 18

Apple will be hosting its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) next month, where the new generative AI features will be announced, and some major changes will be made to the iPhone. We expect the company to bring AI integration to iOS 18 in the upcoming update. Although there is no official statement from Apple on this, a recent report from Bloomberg highlighted that the update will see enhanced features for Siri and a voice upgrade, much like OpenAI's GPT-4o.

AI-generated notification summaries and improved Siri features coming next month with iOS 18

Mark Gurman, in the latest "Power On" newsletter, provided extensive details on Apple's next move to incorporate AI features in the next OS update. The big unveil on June 10 would be Apple's step forward in generative AI technology and pursuing what may be referred to as "proactive intelligence." He highlighted the significant AI-powered features that should be expected in the next OS update at WWDC. In his report, Gurman stated:

As part of the changes, the company will improve Siri's voice capabilities, giving it a more conversational feel, and add features that help users with their day-to-day lives — an approach it calls "proactive intelligence.

Some of the vital upgrades include an AI-generated summary of notifications on your iPhone, transcribing voice memos with the new tools, providing a prompt synopsis, suggesting apps, and creating improved auto-populate features for the calendar app. There will also be advancements in AI-based photo editing features.

The report further stated that Apple would move ahead with an on-device approach for the new AI features. Apple does plan on bringing the services through the cloud with the high-end Mac chips, which it is putting in the data centers to support the upgraded features.

The company has majorly been focused on hardware upgrades, with the iPad Pro powered by an M4 chip to enhance AI feature processing. The upcoming iPhone 16 Pro is also said to get a jump with AI silicon. However, the annual iOS updates are a slow-paced step forward in keeping up with the latest AI trends.

Apple is reportedly in talks with Google to have Gemini on board in iOS 18. No reports have confirmed the agreement as of yet, and we can only hope that some of the major partnership announcements will be made at WWDC, including AI features from OpenAI. Apple needs to be agile in order to keep up with OpenAI and Google's speed in AI advancement, but for now, the inaugural step for AI-generated features with iOS 18 is going to accelerate Apple's attempt to catch up.
