India has finally decided to enter the AI race, as the nation plans to develop a "mega supercomputer" featuring 10,000 GPUs onboard.
The Indian Government Now Focuses On Building a Robust AI Supercomputer Infrastructure, Investing Huge Sums of Money
India has been emerging as the global leader in the technological race, as the country has managed to gain massive interest from companies like Apple and NVIDIA. After making huge strides in the computing segment, India plans to take its chances on the AI hype, as the government announces plans to create a solid AI infrastructure through a vast capital injection of ₹10,300 Crore ($1.24 billion).
The Indian government hasn't disclosed the specifics of what they plan to do to capitalize on the AI hype, but The Register reports that the country is building a vast supercomputer under its "IndiaAI Compute Capacity" initiative. The supercomputer is expected to utilize 10,000 unnamed AI GPUs; however, if we could take guesses, it would be from none other than NVIDIA because Jensen Huang recently met with the Indian PM Narendra Modi, where it was said that Team Green secured a $500 million order for AI GPUs, which included NVIDIA's H100 and GH200 AI GPUs.
Moreover, India plans on ramping up R&D efforts, too, as the government announces a new academic institution, the "IndiaAI Innovation Centre," which is solely responsible for researching and developing new LLM models for leveraging edge computing. Several other reforms are also planned out, which we have listed below.
- The IndiaAI Startup Financing mechanism, which will streamline funding to accelerate commercialization for both startups and industry-led AI projects;
- The IndiaAI Datasets Platform, which will get more cash to improve public sector datasets so that local AI outfits – and government – have the data needed to build appropriate AI apps;
- The IndiaAI FutureSkills program, which will improve access to graduate and postgraduate AI programs, and establish Data and AI Labs that that run foundational AI courses in data and AI across India – especially beyond major cities.

The Indian government is reportedly relying on private sectors to fuel the nation's AI growth, with the likes of Yotto, an Indian AI-focused firm, being in the spotlight. It will be interesting to see what sort of advancements we see within the South East Asian region, as despite having a vast population, it has been behind in AI developments, at least the fundamental ones.
