Samsung had officially unveiled its Galaxy Z TriFold just a few hours ago, giving the entire industry a glimpse into its first triple-folding smartphone. With the latest unveiling, the Korean giant is now effectively competing against Huawei and its Mate XTs as the only two smartphones that can be folded not once, but twice. However, despite both devices flaunting the same form factor, they are different in many ways, and while the Galaxy Z TriFold sports superior specifications over its newest rival, it is inferior to it in one area, and that is being unable to offer three adjustable forms of folding. Here is what that means.
Unlike the Huawei Mate XTs, the Galaxy Z TriFold can only offer a 6.5-inch display output or a 10-inch one, forcing users to choose between a ‘candy bar’ style experience or a tablet one
In a design comparison between the Mate XTs and the Galaxy Z TriFold, prominent technology YouTuber Mrwhosetheboss reveals that Samsung’s first triple-folding smartphone only offers two modes. The first one is using the device in its traditional ‘candy bar’ form factor, and then moving to the massive 10-inch, completely unfolded tablet form factor. Unfortunately, there is no middle ground for the Galaxy Z TriFold, as it cannot offer a single-folded smartphone experience, which is the exact opposite of what the Mate XTs can do.

Not only can it unfold once to transform into a form factor similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 7, but it can also unfold a second time to offer that 10.2-inch goodness. This difference is due to Samsung adopting a U-shaped folding design as opposed to Huawei’s Z-shaped design. When asked why the Korean giant has resorted to this approach, especially given that users will be limited to the number of form factors on the Galaxy Z TriFold, the company says that it was to protect the soft inner display from the elements.

The main display isn’t protected by Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 like the cover panel, and it is significantly weaker against scuffs and scratches. Obviously, Samsung preferred the longevity of the device as opposed to offering more form factors, given that potential buyers are expected to cough up around $2,447 for it. Thankfully, the Galaxy Z TriFold trumps the Mate XTs in hardware specifications, as it is equipped with a Snapdragon 8 Elite, which offers all the processing and graphics horsepower required.
