Helldivers 2 Will Soon Require a PSN Account Even on PC

Today, Helldivers 2 publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment announced with a brief Steam blog post that Helldivers 2 PC players will soon need to register a PlayStation Network account (unless they already have one) to keep playing the game.

SIE explained that technical issues at the game's launch forced the publisher to make linking Steam to a PSN account optional. However, the grace period is about to end, and having a PSN account will become mandatory as of next Monday.

Account linking plays a critical role in protecting our players and upholding the values of safety and security provided on PlayStation and PlayStation Studios games. This is our main way to protect players from griefing and abuse by enabling the banning of players that engage in that type of behaviour. It also allows those players that have been banned the right to appeal.

As such, as of May 6th, all new HELLDIVERS 2 players on Steam will be required to connect their Steam account to a PlayStation Network account. Current players on Steam will start to see the mandatory login from May 30th and will be required to have linked a Steam and PlayStation Network account by June 4th. PlayStation Network accounts are free and easy to set up using this link.

Indeed, Sony had mentioned the game would require a PSN account on PC when it first unveiled the system requirements. However, PC players have historically been less than receptive to this kind of requirement. We'll see if this hampers in any way the extraordinary success of the game developed by Arrowhead, currently the best-selling game released this year according to the latest Circana data.
