Well, Helldivers 2 fans, you are on the wrong side of the galaxy, as revealed by Arrowhead's chief creative officer, who claimed players are the evil guys.

In a game development conference in Sweden, Johan Pilestedt cleared players' misconceptions that annihilating bugs and bots is the right thing to do. Instead, he disclosed that the game is meant for players to be on the evil side. He compared Helldivers to Stormtroopers, relating to a scene from Star Wars, and here is what he had to say:

You know when they try to breach the cell block in Star Wars, and the first stormtrooper through the door, he of course gets shot in the chest by Han Solo. And that's the question: Would you do better climbing into that room trying to capture the bad guys that are trying to take over your lovely Death Star?

Interestingly, this question was raised by a user on Reddit, where he asked whether the players were the bad guys, and to our surprise, Johan Pilestedt finally addressed the topic. The comment section in the thread is pretty interesting, but we won't dive into that for now. The topic has gained traction amongst multiple Helldivers forums all over the internet since, apparently, gamers are actually confused about how Super Earth High Command is proceeding with things since they tend to mess with others, showing their dictatorial nature.

You can watch Pilestedt's full interview here. In it, he discussed multiple aspects of the game and its design idea. Pilestedt also said the goal was to remove the so-called 'plot armor', which is why players tend to die often in this game—including from friendly fire.

Arrowhead Game Studios has expressed its intentions to be the next Blizzard and FromSoftware amid the gigantic popularity the title has been experiencing, and it's safe to say that Helldivers 2 is a complete success, having surpassed 12 million units sold in 12 weeks, which made the game the fastest-selling ever for Sony.
