Helldivers 2 Dev Says the Game Sold Around 1 Million Units, Believes Games Need to Earn the Right to Monetize

Helldivers 2 continues to improve on its player figures. After easily topping God of War off the first spot when it comes to PlayStation launches on Steam, the cooperative sci-fi third-person shooter peaked at 155K concurrent users yesterday.

What about total sales, though? Well, Arrowhead CEO and Helldivers 2 Creative Director Johan Pilestedt provided an update on that front, too, tweeting that the game has sold around one million units, with around an even split between PC and PlayStation 5 users. When prompted about the incredible success of Palworld, he said:

If we have half the success, I will be very happy! And I wish the Pals Team all the best success on a fantastic game!

Pilestedt then commented on a variety of topics. When a user praised the game's non-aggressive monetization, he replied:

"You have to earn the right to monetize" - I truly believe that. If people want to support this title, they have an option, but we are never forcing anyone to do so.

He revealed that helmets having different properties was one of the features Arrowhead had to cut from Helldivers 2:

It's actually one of the features that (unfortunately) had to be cut on the drawing board. Each helmet was supposed to have a visual trait or other boon (range finders, enemy stats, trajectory prediction, flashlight, night vision, etc.)

Larger 'raids' are a possibility, albeit a difficult one to realize, for the future of the game:

Agree it would be amazing! It actually exists in the "wild ideas but probably too hard to do" section of future content. It comes down to network traffic and assumptions in regards to how the game is built

Pilestedt then promised a roadmap would be coming after the matchmaking and connection issues have been resolved. As of nine hours ago, the problems remain:

Our services as well as our partner services have a rate limiter that denies connections beyond a volume per minute to prevent the entire system from failing. We managed to increase the rate limit from 10,000/min to 20,000/min and the total capacity of concurrent players was increased from 250,000 to 360,000. This was however still not enough as the player court jumped to 360k after 5 minutes. As such, the issue with login remains. As for the reward issue, the fix was mitigated but not resolved. And without additional server maintenance, this will still not work as intended. If you get the issue, you can try rebooting the game to increase the chances of it being reset. This is due to the high traffic on the Helldivers 2 servers leading to rewards not being tracked correctly.
