The Tensor G5 was a missed opportunity for Google because it was the company’s first chipset to be mass produced by TSMC, and it still managed to be slower than a near-six-year-old A14 Bionic found in the iPhone 12 Pro Max. Normally, we’d forgive the Mountain View giant’s mistakes, but according to the latest leak, history could repeat itself, as a new Tensor G6 leak suggests it will likely share its predecessor’s disappointing attributes, meaning that the Pixel 11 launch could once more be an entire generation behind its rivals.
Tensor G6 to feature a 7-core CPU in new Geekbench 6 leak, compromising on multi-core performance
A device called ‘Google Kodiak’ was recently spotted with a ‘1 + 4 + 2’ CPU cluster on Geekbench 6 paired with 12GB RAM, hinting that this specific smartphone is the Pixel 11, since the Pixel 10 also featured the same memory count. On this occasion, the fastest core is running at 4.11GHz, followed by four performance cores operating at 3.38GHz and two efficiency cores functioning at 2.65GHz. When discussing the positives, the Tensor G6 would achieve a higher single-core score thanks to its higher clock speeds.
Unfortunately, its multi-core performance could be limited thanks to the absence of one CPU core. Given that the Tensor G6 is expected to utilize TSMC’s 2nm process, it makes little sense for Google to cut down the number of cores, unless, of course, this Tensor G6 is a binned part and could be exclusive to the base Pixel 11. The remaining lineup, which may potentially comprise the Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL, and Pixel 11 Pro Fold, could ship with an 8-core SoC.
Chip binning is an approach companies have used for years, enabling them to save significantly on component costs. Since TSMC’s 2nm wafers are not going to come cheap, Google could be testing how the binned variant of the Tensor G6 performs. The single-core and multi-core scores shouldn’t be discussed at this stage since the chipset is in its early testing stages. When Google gears up to officially launch the Pixel 11 family, we should stumble upon actual results, so stay tuned for more updates.
