Renowned actress Deborah Ann Woll, best known as Jessica Hamby in True Blood and Karen Page in Daredevil, has spoken with CGMagazine about her lead role in God of War Laufey as the titular character.
In an interview conducted during Game Con Canada, Woll confirmed what Game Director Ariel Lawrence had revealed earlier this month: Head of Creative Cory Barlog had this game in mind even before the launch of God of War 2018, and there was already a poster featuring Laufey and Phranque (the cosmic cube). This proves Barlog had a 10-year master plan that included this new title as a natural expansion of the franchise.
I’m so freaking excited. I still pinch myself. You know, again, I’ve known about this for nearly ten years, and I haven’t been able to talk about it. He pitched it to me in 2018, and they had known about it before then. It’s wild. Like when Cory brought me in to talk about doing Ragnarök and show me the 2018 game, he already had a poster for the Laufey game with me and a cube. A cube that’s been there since the beginning. It’s deeply a part of the lore.
Woll then stressed that throughout the entire production of God of War Laufey, the developers and the actors strove to create "the most exciting experience" for fans. She also confirmed that while this is a "new direction", the other direction (classic Kratos adventures) is still going forward, so in a way, this is just an expansion of the universe and its mythology and stories, making the franchise deeper and revealing secrets that had remained under wraps.
All I can say is that every minute that we put into this video game was about how can we make this fun and how can we make this heartfelt and like, we just want this to be the most exciting adventure for the players. They were on our mind the whole time.
I don’t know really—I get emotional even just thinking about it—because I do. I pinch myself that I get to be a part of this and that I get to lead the charge for a little bit of this kind of new direction. The other direction is going to continue going forward. But we’re going to put a little time and focus on expanding this world and really trying to say, this is us doubling down on the world of God of War. We want this to be huge. We want you to feel like there’s such an untapped universe. And this is just the beginning of a step into some of that.
It’s this expansion of mythology, this expansion of story. This is, we now know we’re allowed to say, going to run concurrently to God of War 2018. And so all of the mysteries and the little hints and clues, the questions, the lingering, you know, ideas that you have from that Norse saga, we’re going to answer a lot of that, or we’re going to expand upon it. So this is going to feel like you are getting more story. This is going to continue to deepen what we’ve already learned.
According to one of the most trustworthy insiders, Nate the Hate, Santa Monica Studio is targeting the first half of 2027 for the launch of God of War Laufey. Unlike the previous two games, which eventually launched on PC, this will be a PlayStation exclusive, following Sony's pivot away from single player ports to the PC platform.
