God of War Laufey Dodged a Release Window at State of Play, Yet 2027 Is on the Table

Following months of rumors, God of War Laufey was finally revealed during yesterday's PlayStation State of Play presentation, closing out the show with 20 minutes of uninterrupted gameplay. The showcase didn't, sadly, feature the piece of information most were looking forward to learning: its release window. However, we shouldn't read too much into this absence, as the game is reportedly not years away, according to known and reliable industry journalist Jason Schreier.

“FWIW I wouldn't read too much into God of War Laufey not getting a release date or window - in contrast to a lot of other big announcements, this one *isn't* years away,” Schreier wrote on Bluesky. Further clarifying his stance, the journalist noted that the game is definitely not launching in 2028. As a result, a 2027 release is most likely a given, considering how late 2026 is already out of the question with multiple major releases coming between September and October to avoid Grand Theft Auto 6's November launch

While we did hear rumblings in past months that God of War Laufey was targeting 2027, the lack of a release window announcement made more than a few fans fear that plans might have shifted, despite the game looking incredibly polished in its first showcase. Thankfully, this doesn't seem to be the case

God of War Laufey's reveal was surprising in more ways than one, even if it was known in a certain capacity. Besides showing a faster-paced take of the combat system seen in the previous two entries in the series, the 20-minute showcase confirmed how Faye's adventure in the Everywhen, the afterlife of the gods, is not set in the past, but will act as a continuation of the Jotunn's story. As such, the game shouldn't be considered as a spin-off, but a proper continuation of the series, despite being the first not having Kratos as the main protagonist.
