The popular DIY laptop manufacturer has reiterated that it had no choice but to raise memory prices due to worsening supply availability.

Framework Announces 50% Increase in DDR5 Prices for DIY Laptops, but DIY Desktop is Unaffected

It may be the first time Framework has officially announced an increase in prices of DDR5 memory, but it may not be the last. Framework recently announced on X that it will soon hike the memory prices, citing the worsened supply of DRAM, which is affecting almost every segment. Since DDR5 prices have already gone up by 3X or 4X, it's usual to expect most system integrators to increase the prices of their systems as well.

Today, we increased our pricing on the DDR5 memory configurable in Framework Laptop DIY Edition orders by 50% to begin to respond to the substantially higher costs we are facing from suppliers and distributors. The new pricing remains below what is available in the open market.

Framework published a blog post today, confirming that they will be increasing the DDR5 memory prices by 50%. This will affect the Laptop DIY Edition, but the company has stated it's "highly likely" that they will have to make further price adjustments in the near future on products that utilize DDR5, LPDDR5X, or GDDR memory. Since the memory market has become highly volatile with a big supply and demand imbalance, they have no choice but to increase the prices of their products.

We aren’t changing pricing on any existing pre-orders, and we also are not yet updating pricing on our pre-built laptops or Framework Desktop which come with memory...

Framework said that their DIY desktop will be unaffected by the recent price change, but the wordings clearly indicate that there is a high chance they will increase the prices on the desktop too. At the moment, their Ryzen AI 300-based DIY desktop is available with up to 128 GB LPDDR5X memory for just $1,999. That said, the currently affected product, i.e, Framework Laptop DIY edition, won't bring any price increase for those who have already pre-ordered it.

The company says that it will keep users notified with every price increase, and when the market goes back to normal, it will also lower the prices. Framework says that it will also try to "absorb" costs to maintain pricing stability. With all that being said, it's unlikely the market will return to normal anytime soon, at least not in 2026. With key players Micron exiting the consumer market, it's now even more difficult to fulfill the demand.
