AMD AM4 Revived Again With Ryzen 7 5800X3D "10th Anniversary" CPU, Comes With Premium Thermal Pad At $349

AMD has relaunched its first 3D V-Cache CPU, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, extending the life of its beloved AM4 platform.

AMD AM4 Lives On As The Ryzen 7 5800X3D Makes Its Way Back On Retail Shelves In New "10th Anniversary" Flavor

The Ryzen 7 5800X3D is remembered as the first 3D V-Cache CPU that AMD ever launched. It was released back in 2022 and brought a surprising uplift in gaming performance thanks to its stacked cache design. Its launch brought a fresh performance bump to the AM4 platform at the time, and given its success, AMD has now relaunched the chip to mark the 10th Anniversary of the AM4 platform.

In terms of specifications, the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D offers 8 cores and 16 threads within a single CCD. It features a base clock of 3.4 GHz & a boost clock of 4.5 GHz. The CPU features a TDP of 105W. The first-gen 3D V-Cache CPUs didn't offer overclocking support, & that remains true for the relaunched 5800X3D, as the SRAM cache can only operate up to 1.35V, so overclocking the processor beyond this can damage it permanently.

The AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D carries 32 MB of L3 cache on-die and 64 MB of cache off-die within the vertical stacks. The CPU features a single 3D V-Cache stack that incorporates 64 MB of L3 cache and sits on top of the TSVs already featured on existing Zen 3 CCDs. This will give a total of 96 MB L3 cache directly to the Zen 3 cores.

One thing to note is that AMD's 2nd Gen 3D V-Cache sits underneath the CPU die or Zen CCD, while the 1st Gen 3D V-Cache was seated over the CCD. The new design does deliver better thermal characteristics, allowing AMD to open up overclocking support and even better latency. The new options, such as the 7800X3D, 9800X3D, and 9850X3D, are great in their own aspects, but those are also limited to the newer AM5 platforms, and given just how expensive DDR5 memory is right now, many older AM4 users are going to stick with their current platforms for a while.

In terms of performance, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D brings a hefty 115% increase in gaming performance against the Ryzen 7 2700X, a 47% increase over the Ryzen 7 3700X, and a 16% increase over the 5800X3D. Despite its age, the 3D V-Cache-boosted Zen 3 architecture offers comparable or better performance than the Core i9-14900K.

Cool Thermal Pad Bundle, $349 US Price Point For The Fastest AM4 Gaming CPU

The relaunched Ryzen 7 5800X3D CPU will retain the same Zen 4 core architecture and will be compatible with 400-series and 500-series motherboards, offering a seamless upgrade path to AM4 users running the boards. A cool thing that AMD has done with the Ryzen 7 5800X3D "10th Anniversary Edition" CPU is the bundling of a Carbice Ice Pad, which it says is a long-lasting thermal interface designed to maintain a cool and optimal thermal performance over time.

The AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D originally launched at $449, but the relaunched model is launching at $349 US on the 25th of June.

We believe that this is a slightly higher price point than what one should've expected, but at the same time, if you want better gaming performance without having to upgrade your entire platform, which will cost a lot more, the $349 price is going to be the better option. Or if you want to go AM5, then AMD has another CPU which costs less than the 5800X3D and features a newer architecture, the 7700X3D.
