AMD Guns For Lower-Latency Driven Gaming Performance Boosts With EXPO Ultra Low Latency DDR5 Memory
Today at Computex, AMD is teasing a brand new technology for its EXPO memory standard called EXPO Ultra Low Latency. With EXPO ULL, AMD is adding a new performance boost for its Ryzen platforms with tightly tuned DDR5 DIMMs that enable more FPS in games.
So what is ULL? It's another set of features being added to modernize and enhance the existing EXPO Memory technology. We know that AMD is working on the EXPO 1.2 standard for its future Zen CPUs, adding preliminary support for CUDIMM and more. But another feature of EXPO 1.2 is ULL memory, & that's being previewed today.
AMD EXPO Ultra Low Latency DDR5 memory kits will feature automatic memory overclocking, will boost both average and 1% Low gaming FPS, while being available from leading partners such as G.Skill, Fury by Kingston, KLEVV, Lexar, TeamGroup, V-Color, XPG by ADATA, and Origin Code. These memory kits will be available in June.
In terms of performance, AMD claims that EXPO Ultra Low Latency delivers an average 13% FPS gain versus a JEDEC-set DDR5 memory and a 4% boost over the current EXPO standard. In 1% Lows, the uplift jumps to 15% versus a JEDEC-set kit and 4% over the current EXPO-configured memory modules.
EXPO ULL (Ultra-Low Latency) Mode Further Tunes Latency
Additionally, AMD is working to add new memory modes with EXPO 1.2 geared towards low-latency. With EXPO 1.2, we will see the launch of new EXPO memory kits enabling the ULL (Ultra-Low-Latency) mode. With this mode, users can see a latency drop of 5-7ns versus a traditional 6000 MT/s DDR5 kit.
It is said that existing AGESA 1.3.0.1 and AGESA 1.3.0.0 BIOS releases already include DDR5 CUDIMM & Ultra-Low Latency memory support on AM5 motherboards, but it is still not what you'd call "Full" support. The final DDR5 CUDIMM support will be added with AMD's Zen 6 lineup, and we will also see newer AM5 motherboards with full compatibility for the memory technology.
