Billionaire Elon Musk has tweeted on the performance of AMD's AI hardware, claiming that it is sufficient for small and medium AI models, but NVIDIA still has the edge over high-end workloads.

Elon Musk Says Small-to-Medium AI Models Work "Pretty Well" On AMD Hardware, But NVIDIA Dominates Model Training

When it comes to AMD vs. NVIDIA in the AI industry, there are actually a lot of parameters to discuss when comparing both firms and their respective AI offerings, but it won't be wrong to say that Team Green capitalized on the AI hype early on, which eventually allowed them to develop a 'lock-in' ecosystem driven by CUDA. This didn't allow firms like AMD to compete aggressively with Team Green, but in recent times, the situation has changed for the firm, and considering that Elon Musk has appreciated Team Red's hardware, it shows that AMD has progressed massively.

xAI is known to have utilized AMD's Instinct MI300/MI300X AI accelerators for its AI models, and Elon is known to have partnered with Team Red for Tesla as well. However, NVIDIA is still the dominant partner for Elon's AI needs, but it seems that for small-to-mid-size models, AMD's AI performance has seen appreciation from Musk. While for model training, Team Red might not be the go-to spot for hardware needs, but in areas such as inference workloads, fine-tuning, and mid-sized foundation models, AMD's Instinct lineup has seen adoption from all over the industry.

One key reason AMD hasn't managed to tap into Big Tech as aggressively as NVIDIA with its AI products is that, with Team Green's dominance, AMD has seen little chance to pitch its products to firms like Microsoft, Meta, or Google. While Big Tech uses AMD's Instinct GPU lineup for their AI needs, it isn't as widespread as NVIDIA, which means that Team Red has to do a lot more to garner attention, and Elon's statement will definitely give them a boost.

More importantly, we discussed how AMD's recent steps in the AI market are positioning them as a direct competitor to NVIDIA, and with the advancements being made to the ROCm stack and the hardware offerings, the competition between Team Red and Team Green is indeed going to be a lot more aggressive moving ahead.
