Distracted Boyfriend

Out of the many joys bestowed upon us thanks to the internet, memes have got to be in the top five. Millions of images with embellished text provide a relatable context, and none of them are more relatable than the ‘Distracted Boyfriend’ meme, where an unsuspecting man is caught by her girlfriend staring at another female with whom he has no emotional connection. Though many memes have been created thanks to this template, there is also now an AI-powered video version that you should check out.

AI video of ‘Distracted Boyfriend’ meme is far from perfect, with face changes and clothes magically appearing as sufficient evidence that the technology needs tons of refinement

From an image to a proper video, @burconsult reveals on X that a 4-second clip of the ‘Distracted Boyfriend’ meme now exists on the internet, revealing how far AI’s reach has gone. The individual did not care to share details of the program used to create the video, but thankfully, @fofrAI revealed in the thread that stability.ai’s Stable Video can carry out the task. Unfortunately, the clip shared by @fofrAI has more than a few blemishes that pop up on the boyfriend’s eyes and elsewhere.

A refined version is later shared by @burconsult below, but even that is far from perfect, with several anomalies appearing in the video. For instance, when the second female turns around to spot the boyfriend, not only does her face change, but so do her clothes, shifting from a sleeveless top to brown sleeves that magically appear out of nowhere. Even the girlfriend who caught her partner staring at the girl had her facial features completely shape-shifted, indicating that this technology needs a ton of work.

Regardless, the existence of this technology only means that from hereon, stability.ai will continue to receive updates over time. At the time of writing, Stable Video’s maximum duration is 5 seconds, up to 30 frames per second, with a processing time of 2 minutes or less, though the timing likely depends on what hardware is performing this task. Do check out the small clip and let us know what you think.
