Thanks to the support of Ubisoft and Valve, a Dark Messiah of Might and Magic Community Edition is now in the works with an updated engine.

KingDavidW, the modder behind wiltOS Technologies, announced that a proper Dark Messiah of Might and Magic Community Edition is officially in the works.

As you might recall, they had been working on an RTX Remix version of the game while also implementing online co-op functionality. Now, though, wiltOS Technologies has received the blessing from Ubisoft and Valve to create a proper Community Edition that will be released on Steam, probably with integrated Steam Workshop support for easy mod installation.

Thanks to Valve's support, the game will be updated to a newer version of the Source engine (while still remaining based on Source 1, not 2). Overall, with the support of both companies, the modders will enjoy much greater stability with the new SDK and have direct code access to expand the game and fix issues, such as the deep-rooted crashes baked into the original game's aging, mutex-less locking mechanisms. All current mods are being integrated into this new foundation, though it will take some time.

Inspired by the relic system featured in the Dark Messiah of Might and Magic: Elements version that originally launched on Xbox 360, the team introduced Runes, collectibles scattered across levels that unlock gameplay mutators (harder, wackier, or easier modifiers). Three are available in the Restoration Mod's prologue, one in the Arena mode. Elements multiplayer maps are also being ported back to PC by modder QWERTY.

The Alien Swarm TileGen system has been repurposed into a fully functional procedural dungeon generator with multi-floor 3D tile placement. Community mappers are needed to help populate it before it opens to players.

The co-op mod also received a major SDK code refactor to bring it in line with the Advanced SDK. New character work is also ongoing; modder Riddick is building the Undead Assassin, while modder StickyFingaz is working on a new assassin armor set. The mod launcher was updated for multi-language support, and now translators are needed to handle that work. Finally, wiltOS is preparing a new content delivery system to avoid redundant asset re-downloads across mods.

wiltOS Technologies also released a new teaser trailer for the RTX Remix version and opened up access to it. Anyone can download it via GitHub; it requires both the wiltOS Dark Messiah Mod Launcher and the wiltOS Dark Messiah Advanced SDK Base Module.

As someone who absolutely loved Dark Messiah of Might and Magic when it launched twenty years ago and misses that kind of game, I'm thrilled about this development. Hopefully, more classics will be rejuvenated with this type of work and support.
