A character in the game 'Cyberpunk 2077' is surrounded by cables and machinery in a dimly lit, industrial environment.

If you can believe it, Cyberpunk 2077 is about to get yet another visual improvement, at least for players who power their console gaming with a PS5 Pro. Developer CD Projekt RED's infamous RPG is getting a new update tomorrow, April 8, 2026, specifically around allowing the game to take full advantage of the professional-grade PlayStation, and the additional power that comes with it over a base PS5.

A new PlayStation Blog post digs into the numerous enhancements that PS5 Pro owners will be able to take advantage of, including support for PSSR (and yes, it is PSSR 2.0 support), new performance modes specific to PS5 Pro, and a slew of ray tracing improvements.

"We wanted to make the most of the PS5 Pro's cutting-edge technology by bringing 4K visuals, powered-up performance, advanced ray tracing, and more to the Cyberpunk 2077 experience," writes Kuba Knapik, vice president and global art director at CD Projekt RED in the blog post. "The goal was to bring the very best out of both the hardware and our game to make Night City shine as brightly as possible."

The update adds three performance modes available for PS5 Pro owners: Ray Tracing Pro, a regular Ray Tracing mode, and a Performance mode, each of which tune the settings for your preferred experience. Ray Tracing Pro, as you might've guessed from its name, is the one that puts everything up to its maximum quality.

CD Projekt RED made significant improvements to ray tracing for this update, as Knapik explains, the team "implemented BVH8 (8-way Bounding Volume Hierarchy) support to implement ray-traced lighting, shadows, and reflections, bringing the lighting even closer to our artistic vision for this world."

Ray Tracing Pro turns on all ray tracing enhancements and targets 40 FPS on displays with variable refresh rate (VRR) or 30 FPS on displays without VRR. The regular Ray Tracing mode is a step in the middle between Ray Tracing Pro and Performance mode, targeting 60 FPS with "select ray tracing enhancements" turned on. Finally, the Performance mode, as you'd expect, is all about frame rates and lets you play at up to 90 FPS on displays with VRR "while maintaining high image fidelity."

It's nice to see Cyberpunk 2077 continue to get improvements while we wait for what's next from CD Projekt RED, especially since it has already confirmed that Cyberpunk won't be getting any new DLCs or expansions. The studio recently revealed that it grew 24% in the last year as it begins to ramp up work on The Witcher 4 and the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, so as things move with a bit more speed at the studio, hopefully we'll see more on those coming projects soon.
