Cyberpunk 2077 Dev: “Witcher 3 Set A Certain Bar And We Definitely Cannot Go Lower”
Following the Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, expectations for CD Projekt Red’s upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 are insanely high, and the Polish developer seems to be very aware of that fact.
Since CD Projekt Red showed off the teaser trailer for Cyberpunk 2077 back in 2013, the hype for the cyberpunk-themed RPG is real, and while the game has been in development for quite some time now, the title won’t be releasing any time soon. Speaking to Eurogamer at the Polish ‘Digital Dragons’ conference, CD Projekt’s co-founder, Marcin Iwinski, stated that the development team has lots of work to do with the game. Additionally, Iwinski confirmed that the RPG won’t be at the coming E3.
"It might happen that we will be at E3 and we will show something at E3, but I just want to make it clear it's not Cyberpunk," Iwinksi told Eurogamer. "We still have a lot of work to do with Cyberpunk."
There has been a lot of speculation regarding the release date of Cyberpunk 2077, and according to CD Projekt Red’s own recent earnings report, the game won’t be released before 2017. The amazing success of The Witcher 3 and its expansion clearly changed expectations for CD Projekt Red’s upcoming title, something that the Polish developer is very aware of.
"When you release a game like The Witcher and create the expansions, the perception is not the pre-Witcher 3 expectation," said Iwinski. "The bar is higher - and it's externally and internally as well"
The Witcher 3; Wild Hunt raised a certain bar for new games to be released by CD Projekt Red, and fans seems to be expecting a game that’s even better (or at least on par).
"I cannot talk about plans but we have to adjust to it and also adjust our own ambitions. Assuming that we could have something out this year, if it will not be better than Witcher 3, people [will say], 'Hmm, wow, why is it not better?' Witcher 3 set a certain bar and we definitely cannot go lower. It's always about improving and making new, pretty stuff, [and] storytelling games and mechanics and what not", CD Projekt Red's co-founder added.
We can’t wait to learn more about Cyberpunk 2077, and can only hope that the Polish developer will deliver with their ambitious RPG.
