With Grand Theft Auto 6 confirmed for a November 19 release, most major publishers are doing everything they can to launch their games before Rockstar Games releases what is expected to be a record-breaking game. As a result, September 2026 is looking to be the most packed month in years, but some games may have an uphill battle nonetheless, such as CAPCOM's Onimusha: Way of the Sword, the first new entry in the series in a very long time.
Over the weekend, X user @intercelluar, who proved their credibility by leaking footage of Assassin's Creed: Black Flag Resynced, and more recently, revealing the yet-to-be-officially confirmed Rayman Legends Retold, which has been corroborated by multiple sources, revealed that Onimusha: Way of the Sword is supposedly launching on September 25. This, however, is old info, and may be outdated.
While the game may not release exactly on September 25, chances are still very high for a September release window. "Was only ever told a Sept release target; but never a specific date. I had heard September window a fair bit ago," said reliable insider NateDrake on the ResetERA forums. "Late Sept makes a lot of sense for release. I don't know if the exact day is correct; but the month of September at least tracks with the release timing expectation," the insider continued.
Although there's little doubt about the game's quality, considering the quality of CAPCOM's recent games like Resident Evil Requiem and PRAGMATA, Onimusha: Way of the Sword may still face intense release window congestion if it indeed launches this September. The month is going to be packed with games targeting similar audiences, starting with Phantom Blade Zero launching on September 9, followed by Marvel's Wolverine launching on September 15. In addition, Gears of War: E-Day is reportedly also targeting a September launch.
Hopefully, the game's unique mechanics, which I had the chance to test at last year's Gamescom, will be enough to ensure the return of the long-dormant series is successful.
