Avalanche Studios, Dev Behind Just Cause 3, Suffers Layoffs

It's been reported by Game Informer that Avalanche Studios has gone through two series of layoffs that began over the summer right after Mad Max was finished and released. But it looks like those layoffs were only temporary in nature as they were spreading their staff out among too many projects.

Avalanche Studios layoffs aren't a vision of the future, they'll be rehiring and are in good financial shape.

In their statement to Game Informer, Avalanche Studios told them the reasoning behind the decisions they had to make. In any industry it's difficult to make decisions such as this but at times they're necessary given the immediate information available to you. The layoff's happened in both their Stockholm and New York offices, though with the impending success of Just Cause 3 and the future of their other projects is allowing them to rehire a lot of those they let go.

"The transition between major projects is always challenging, especially for independent developers. We have just completed one project and are currently wrapping up another. In starting up our new projects, we were not able to perfectly match the team sizes and skill sets of the previous ones, and we unfortunately had to let some talented developers go. 12 developers were given notice in New York. There was a similar number of notices given this summer in Stockholm, but right now we are in the process of rehiring some of those who left. We expect to keep hiring in the new year. This unfortunate event does not affect any of our current projects, and we're taking measures to avoid situations like this in the future."
