Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced can comfortably be described as the worst-kept secret in gaming history, with its long story of rumors and leaks of all kinds.
The official reveal is here at last, though, and it's juicy. The presentation opened with Matt Ryan (who was among the "leakers" last year), the voice actor of protagonist Edward Kenway, confirming that Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced is a faithful remake, not a reinvention. It is entirely rebuilt from the ground up using the latest version of Ubisoft's Anvil engine while preserving the original story and character arc. Notably, the original game will remain available after the release of Resynced, officially set for July 9, 2026.
To celebrate the launch of this remake, Matt Ryan also unveiled a new Collector's Edition during the presentation. The Collector's Edition is priced at $199.99 and includes:
- Additional in-box goodies
- A highly detailed figurine of Edward Kenway
- A notebook containing Kenway's diary entries and adventure logs
- A brooch
- A cloth map
The Standard Edition will cost $59.99. Those who pre-order Assassin's Creed: Black Flag Resynced will receive the Blackbeard's Crimson Pack, which includes an exclusive costume for Edward Kenway, as well as a pair of swords and a set of pistols.

A Faithful Remake With New Content — and Some Cuts
First things first: Resynced is a solo, story-driven action adventure, not an RPG. Black Flag was one of the last traditional Assassin's Creed games before the new RPG-like direction that started with Origins. This isn't changing with the remake, which will be a relief for fans of the original. While remaining faithful, Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced adds lots of new content:
- Brand new chapters and missions
- A new scene with Edward's wife, Caroline, written by original writer Darby McDevitt
- New narrative arcs involving Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet
- New officer questlines that dive into each officer's backstory
On the other hand, Ubisoft Singapore (which worked on the original and is leading the development of this remake) has cut the multiplayer mode and the story DLCs, Aveline and Freedom Cry, because they featured other protagonists and the focus of Resynced is entirely on Edward Kenway.
The modern-day segments have also been reworked. Rather than reflecting the franchise-wide transitional moment of 2013 (with Desmond's story), the new modern-day sequences focus specifically on Edward's internal struggles, connecting his memories to the Animus in a more introspective way.
Overhauled on Land and Sea
On the gameplay side, the developers have overhauled the combat system into a more action-oriented experience. Key changes include faster, more fluid attacks and combos, perfect parries that open enemies up for instant kills (followed by up to four chained takedowns), and increased environmental interaction using walls, ledges, and breakables. Recklessness won't get players too far, though, with the game punishing them for overreaching.
The parkour movement has been improved, too, with smooth moves including free jumps, back ejects, and side ejects. These are informed by design improvements from recent Assassin's Creed titles while preserving Edward's classic moves. Movement flows more naturally from one action to the next across rooftops, docks, and jungles, and the players are more in control of Kenway.
The stealth system of Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced was also enhanced to allow crouching freely anywhere as part of the toolkit. A major pain point from the original, instant desynchronization upon discovery during tailing and eavesdropping missions, has been eliminated: being spotted no longer ends the mission; instead, targets react, and players must adapt accordingly.
Of course, the main feature of Black Flag has always been its naval gameplay, which to this day is considered among the most accomplished in an action/adventure game and even inspired the recent survival game Windrose (which has sold one million units on Steam in a few days). Black Flag Resynced expands the arsenal available to the Jackdaw ship with alternative fire upgrade modes for every weapon, offering more flexibility in ship combat. Three brand new officers have been added: Lucy Baldwin, The Padre, and Dead Man Smith, each with a unique narrative questline and special gameplay ability (for example, Dead Man Smith unlocks a double broadside shot). Perhaps most important is that the new dynamic weather, powered by Anvil's Atmos system, will influence how the ship handles. Players can also now find a cat or monkey as a pet for the Jackdaw. Moreover, underwater exploration has been described as more expansive, more beautiful, and more perilous than ever before.
Sea shanties, another defining feature of the original game's naval experience, are preserved, and new shanties connected to the story have been added. A major musical collaboration was announced with Woodkid (Yoann Lemoine), a French artist previously known for his work on Assassin's Creed Revelations. Woodkid, speaking from his Paris studio, described themes of escapism, rebellion, and exploration as central to his own work and expressed excitement about the newly reimagined track created specifically for Resynced.
Visuals, PC Requirements, and More
Visually, the game looks a lot better than the original, thanks to high-resolution textures, enhanced lighting, and strikingly detailed environments. The game uses the latest version of the Anvil engine, so that's not surprising, although it does not seem like the seasonal changes seen in Assassin's Creed Shadows are returning here. Ubisoft has already shared detailed specifications; you can find them below.

Interestingly, Ubisoft reached out to select community fans and gave them the chance to play Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced early. The developers then collected feedback and also tried to understand what the players were most passionate about. Above all, players were particularly interested in Edward himself, and specifically how he moves, how he reads on screen, and even the details on his face.
It won't be long before we have the chance to play the game ourselves. Stay tuned on Wccftech for more news on this remake in the coming weeks.
