Apple's Vision Pro is all the hype as the company gears to launch the headset in early 2024. Announced at its WWDC event in June, the company failed to provide the wearable's exact launch time frame. While we are still waiting for the launch, the company is already working on the second-gen version of the Vision Pro, which is expected to feature a brighter display than the original model with better efficiency.
Apple Vision Pro 2 to launch with a brighter and more power-efficient display; Samsung could be the likely supplier for the technology
According to a new report by The Elec, Apple plans to upgrade the display on the Vision Pro 2. Note that the company will stick to the existing technology for some time before upgrading it. The forthcoming Vision Pro model will feature a WOLED panel. While the displays are pretty sharp, the Vision Pro 2 will house an OLEDoS display, a significant upgrade that offers a plethora of benefits over WOLED displays.
Compared to WOLED displays, RGB OLEDoS displays produce color and light from the nearby RGB sub-pixels on a single layer. There are two benefits derived from this technique. The displays will be brighter and will not require an additional color filter. The WOLED displays depend on an RGB color layer to filter out the white light. Additionally, the entire process is more efficient, significantly contributing to preserving battery life.
The battery life on the Vision Pro will not allow longer sessions without plugging in. However, with the new display technology onboard, the Vision Pro 2 can enhance the battery life. However, the next generation of Vision Pro will not launch for another couple of years. The RGB OLEDoS displays will arrive with the Vision Pro 2 in 2027. Until then, the company will use the WOLED displays to upgrade the product with further utilities.
At this point, Samsung is the only company that can provide RGB OLEDoS displays, as the supplier acquired eMagin earlier in 2023. The supplier will take Apple's business from Sony if it manages to move ahead with the upgrade. As mentioned earlier, Apple will launch the Vision Pro 2 in 2027, and according to industry analyst Mong-Chi Kuo, the company will not upgrade the product in the meantime.
However, given the Vision Pro's mighty price tag, it was previously reported that the company could introduce budget variants of the Vision Pro in 2025. Nonetheless, take the news with a grain of salt as the final verdict rests with Apple. We will share more details on the subject, so stick around.
