A launch by the end of 2025 may not be possible, and we might have an idea why

A slew of hardware updates are expected to enter mass production soon, with the first lineup expected to be Apple’s M5 MacBook Pro models. Of course, as the majority of readers would have guessed, next in line will be the M5 MacBook Air series, which packs the same chipset but is bundled at a lower price. Typically, Apple waits for October or November to make the announcement official, but from the looks of it, the company might have a different intent.

No M5 Mac mini refresh mentioned in the latest report, but the updated Studio Display is scheduled to be a part of Apple’s hardware unveilings

On the latest edition of Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman’s ‘Power On’ newsletter, we learn that there are a ton of products that the Cupertino giant has yet to launch, starting with the M5 MacBook Pro family. Keep in mind that the company announced the M4 models on October 30, meaning there is just a little over a month remaining for Apple to make a move. Additional details surrounding future product announcements are given below:

“Beyond the fairly imminent debut of new iPad Pro and Vision Pro models, Apple is nearing mass production of its next MacBook Pros (code-named J714 and J716), MacBook Airs (J813 and J815) and two new Mac monitors (J427 and J527), I’m told. These devices are still slated for release between the end of this year and the first quarter of next year, but it’s exciting to know these are nearing a key stage.”

The report does not mention when Apple will launch the M5 MacBook Pro, but Gurman usually has these details prepared well in advance. The fact that he has not provided a timeline, suggests that release might not arrive in October or November, meaning that a January unveiling could be a more likely outcome. During Q1 2026, Apple could officially announce the M5 MacBook Air range in the 13-inch and 15-inch display sizes.

The M4 Mac mini, which is one of the best ‘price to performance’ products that Apple launched last year, does not have a successor in sight, but the report mentions a Studio Display refresh. Also, a new iPad Pro family is yet to be announced, hinting that Apple has changed its product launch stance, with Gurman stating that this hardware is expected to arrive during the first half of next year.

Why is Apple taking a little longer to announce the new M5 MacBook Pro family?

It could be that the upcoming series offers little to no noteworthy upgrades to justify an upgrade, besides the M5, which will probably utilize TSMC’s third-generation 3nm process, just like the A19 and A19 Pro. With the holiday season around the corner, the California-based giant’s M4 models will likely witness a sizable discount, leading to a higher volume of purchases that propels Apple’s revenue and unit sales.

This strategy effectively allows the removal of existing inventory to make room for the M5-powered portable Macs. As for the evidence that Apple’s M4 lineup of chipsets still deliver sufficiently, turn your attention to the M4 Max. It is currently Apple’s most powerful notebook silicon, and according to Cinebench 2024’s single-core and multi-core tests, it beats Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme, demonstrating that, for lack of a better word, it is a beast and will hold up well against the test of time.
