Apple needs to make AI acquisitions to boost Apple Intelligence growth

Apple Intelligence has been stuck in a rut ever since its debut, and while we were expecting significant utility-focused gains at WWDC, the company decided only to offer a Liquid Glass redesign to the general public. While the company did open Apple Intelligence to third-party developers, there is still a lot to be done before the platform is ready to compete against OpenAI and Google. A prominent analyst from Wedbush claims that the next 12 months are critical for Apple Intelligence and its growth.

Apple may have opened Apple Intelligence to developers, but analysts believe the company must act fast to catch up in the competitive AI landscape

Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives claims that Apple has laid out its vision for AI with third-party developer support, which could prove to be quite beneficial for the platform's growth in the future (via AppleInsider). He also claims that Apple Intelligence will be the focus of investors next year, which means the company has no time to spare to improve the platform for show-and-tell.

Apple's eager move to boost Apple Intelligence could make it acquire AI companies, which would be necessary to gain traction in the field. The Cupertino giant has already made several acquisitions in the past for the same category, but this time around, the company should have something bigger at hand than it already has. Moreover, the company's past acquisitions have borne little fruit as the features they targeted were quite small or for an entirely different purpose altogether.

In the real world, Apple lags behind Google and OpenAI, and possibly Samsung as well, when it comes to user-centric features. The AI industry is reaching its peak, and the iPhone maker has still not made any breakthroughs. While it is typical Apple behavior, the company must pick up the pace to retain its user base, if not expand it. The delay of Apple's highly anticipated Personalized Siri experience struck a massive blow to the company's image and its credibility in the sector. We are now expecting the feature to see daylight early next year.

Apart from this, Siri has always been lackluster in the digital assistant space, and while some users desperately needed a better AI assistant, we believe that the dedicated ChatGPT-like chatbot would offer more than necessary to the end user. The analyst did not specify the kind of acquisitions Apple should make, but remains confident that the company can deliver.

As mentioned, WWDC 2025 was not an AI-focused event, which only goes on to show that the company could be working on something bigger and better for the end user. We will keep you posted on more details on the company's acquisition plans, so do stick around.
