Apple is planning to launch a new Magic Keyboard accessory for its low-end iPad models, possibly to boost sales of the device and classify it as a laptop-replacement. Apple's "What's a Computer" campaign for the iPad sparked a controversy back in the days and so far, the iPad is far from perfect from being a true laptop replacement. To justify its claims, the company is making the necessary changes that will take it a step closer.
Apple is working on a Magic Keyboard for the entry-level iPad and the iPad Air lineup
Apple introduced a revised iteration of the Magic Keyboard for the OLED iPad Pro models and while the accessory was pretty well received, we know for sure that an equivalent counterpart will not be available for the entry-level iPad. The company could introduce a version that works for the low-end iPad and the iPad Air lineup, which could suggest that it will be available in different sizes.
The news was shared by analyst Mark Gurman in his latest Power On newsletter, citing that the company's suppliers are developing a new keyboard for the iPad. As for when it will be available, the analyst claims that the Magic Keyboard will not launch until next year. Since Apple will introduce upgraded iPad Air models next year with new processor configuration, we can expect the accessory to launch at the company's Spring event.
We can expect the Magic Keyboard to lack an aluminum casing, but there could be some similarities with the variant that is designed for the OLED iPad Pro. For instance, Apple could introduce a dedicated function row on the keyboard for entry-level iPad models. The rest of the design language could be pretty similar to the one Apple introduced for the M2 iPad Pro models.
Apple launched the OLED iPad Pro earlier this year at its Spring event and the device has a lot going for it in terms of processing and other front-facing additions like a dual tandem OLED display. The dedicated Magic Keyboard for the M4 iPad Pro is built from aluminum and comes with a function row. It also features a bigger trackpad for better controls and much more. Apple continues to sell the previous version of the Magic Keyboard to users who are still using the mini-LED iPad Pro.
Apple is expected to host another event after the iPhone 16 launch, where it will announce the M4 Pro and M4 Max MacBook Pro models alongside the redesigned Mac mini. Do you think Apple will upgrade the 24-inch iMac with an M4 chip?
