Apple Health's recent integration with ChatGPT Health is now allowing those who deem current AI advances as nothing more than a glorified 'Chinese room' iteration to claim vindication, courtesy of a bombshell investigative report from The Washington Post that lays bare the inherent fallacies and inconsistencies within the chatbot's health diagnoses.
The integration between Apple Health and ChatGPT Health is not only failing to live up to expectations but is morphing into a downright dangerous tool
We noted in early January that OpenAI's new ChatGPT Health service was designed to provide accurate health-related information to users. To gain personal insights, users could securely connect medical records and wellness apps - like Apple Health, Function, and MyFitnessPal - to allow ChatGPT to provide assistance in understanding recent test results, prepare for medical appointments, get advice on how to approach diet and workout routine, or understand the tradeoffs of different insurance options based on the given healthcare patterns.
Now, however, a recent Washington Post investigation has laid bare the severe shortcomings in relying on ChatGPT Health's medical interpretation of your personal data gleaned from services such as Apple Health.
As such, the reporter Geoffrey Fowler gave ChatGPT Health access to the recorded 29 million steps and 6 million heartbeat measurements from his Apple Health app, asking the chatbot to grade his cardiac health. The query resulted in an F grade. Fowler's doctor, however, summarily rubbished the grade when apprised of the development, declaring that he was at such low risk for cardiac-related issues that his insurance would likely decline to cover additional testing to disprove the chatbot's diagnosis.
More worryingly still, ChatGPT Health gave Fowler a different grade when he asked the same question repeatedly, with his grade swinging between a B and an F in those instances. Clearly, with such wild vacillations, the service has no meaningful ameliorative or diagnosis-related utility, at least in its current form. This also poses grave ramifications for Apple's ambitions to imbue the Apple Health service with additional AI-related superpowers.
