WWDC 2024 incorporated some major moves by Apple on the AI front. The keynote revolved around the company jumping on the artificial intelligence frenzy with its own twist, naming the advanced capabilities as Apple Intelligence. One key update coming to iOS 18 is the partnership of the Cupertino tech giant with OpenAI to bring ChatGPT to iPhone to assist Siri with AI-generated prompts. While the company did mention how it plans to bring other AI platforms on board later on, previous reports suggested that it is also looking for a partner in China to extend the services further. A new update gives more on the service expansion plans.
Apple is actively looking for partners in China to expand its AI features in an attempt to match up with competition
The partnership between Apple and OpenAI would not bear much fruit in China as the services are unavailable in the country. Since Apple has to go with an alternative route to expand its services, news regarding the company actively seeking partnerships locally has been making the rounds.
According to a recent report by the Wall Street Journal, Apple is finding local service providers and has been in conversation with companies like Baidu, Alibaba Group, and Baichuan AI to bring Apple Intelligence to the second-largest smartphone market in an attempt to grow substantially. However, no confirmation of the company's ability to seal a deal has yet emerged, emphasizing the hurdles in the market expansion process.
For now, Apple Intelligence capabilities coming with iOS 18 this fall have a niche market given that the European Union is not on the list. With the inability to strike a partnership in China, the features may be rolled out to limited users for the time being.
The Chinese market is harder to enter as the process of getting government approvals for the LLM models is quite cumbersome, with hardly any companies outside the country having any success with launching AI products in China.
We doubt that a Chinese variant of Apple Intelligence could be developed by September, so the chances of the services coming to China later are greater. Apple plans to provide support for additional languages in 2025. In comparison to the competition, Apple seems to be going slow-paced when it comes to establishing its capabilities in China, as on-device AI integration is already being provided by companies like Vivo, Xiaomi, and Huawei, and Apple needs to act quickly if it plans on growing its market further.
