Apple is not above employing a few sneaky tricks to steal some of its competitor's thunder, especially as coincidence alone is not a very credible explanation for Apple's casual disclosure of a few agentic capabilities of the new Siri, with the announcement apparently timed to land just hours ahead of Google's I/O event.
Behold the new accessibility-geared Apple Intelligence features: VoiceOver, Magnifier, Voice Control, and Accessibility Reader
Apple has just unveiled four key accessibility-themed Apple Intelligence features that are likely to debut with iOS 27.
Apple Intelligence's VoiceOver and Magnifier features are meant to assist individuals who are either blind or have a degraded vision.
The Image Explorer tool within VoiceOver leverages Apple Intelligence to give a detailed description of a given image, including pictures and scanned bills. When users press the Action button on the iPhone, VoiceOver leverages the upgraded Live Recognition feature to answer questions about whatever is within the camera's viewfinder.
Magnifier brings visual descriptions to a high-contrast interface. The Magnifier app can be controlled via voice commands, such as "zoom in" or "turn on flashlight," and brings support for the Action button to quickly answer visual queries.
Voice Control allows you to control your iPhone and the apps it contains via natural language-based voice commands. With "say what you see," users can navigate any app, including those with visual layouts, such as the Apple Maps.
Accessibility Reader makes it a relative breeze to peruse text-heavy, complex content, and is geared towards readers with a wide range of disabilities, including dyslexia. It brings support for on-demand summaries and high-fidelity translations.
Other features:
- With Apple Intelligence's on-device speech recognition, you can now generate subtitles for any video across Apple's ecosystem.
- You can use your Vision Pro to control your wheelchair via the Tolt and LUCI drive systems in the US.
- Vehicle Motion Cues within visionOS can help reduce motion sickness for car passengers who use Apple Vision Pro. You can also select elements with your eye movement using Dwell Control.
- Name Recognition can notify hearing-impaired users when their name is called.
As we noted earlier, the timing of these announcements is just a tad too suspicious to render this disclosure a coincidence, especially as it comes just ahead of Google's I/O, where Google is likely to unveil a bevy of Gemini-driven agentic abilities.
Do note that Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who is one of the most prolific Apple-focused leakers right now, conceded recently that Apple won't be able to catch up to Gemini's current capabilities for another one to two years. This admission came against the backdrop of the impressive Gemini Intelligence features that Google recently unveiled for Android 17.
From Apple's perspective, therefore, it makes perfect sense to try to steal some of Google's thunder with today's announcements, especially given the entrenched perception that Apple's AI-related lag will persist for quite some time.
