Google has already announced the new Pixel 9 series, and the devices came early this year, which is a welcome change, but the fact that they are still running last year's software is a bit unusual. Google has already released various developer previews, and the build is not in its final stages, but the company has not shared when users should expect Android 15 to be released for the Pixel 9 and older devices. Well, we now know when Google could release the Android 15 update to the general public, and it is not that far off.
Android 15 slated to arrive on Pixel 9 series and older models starting October 15 unless Google decides otherwise
Android 15 will bring a handful of new features and changes to the table, especially for the new Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro models. The software will also support a wide range of older models, starting from the Pixel 6 to the latest Pixel 9 lineup. If you are waiting for the Android 15 release, here's when to expect the final build to arrive.
The company released Android 15 AOSP earlier this month, but the update will take its time to reach the end user, as it is expected to arrive in October. It is anticipated that Android 15 will be released for all compatible Pixel phones on October 15, according to a recent report. Since Google usually rolls out updates on a Monday, October 14 seems unlikely as it is a Columbus Day holiday.
As a disclaimer, the publication noted that Google could release the update later than October 15 if it sees fit and if there are uncatered bugs still running in the system. This means that readers should take the news with a grain of salt at this stage, but the most likely date for the Android 15 release is October 15. This year, Google's Android update will only be compatible with Pixel phones and devices powered by the company's custom Tensor chips.
Google is possibly releasing the update two months after the Pixel 9 launch is possibly to curate bugs and issues. We can expect the update to be pretty stable even at launch, unlike older updates that brought various issues to the lineup. Android 15 will bring new visual changes as well as under-the-hood improvements to take on Apple's latest iOS 18 update. Apart from this, the update will be quite special for the new Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro, as it will house numerous Gemini features, which were showcased at the company's I/O event earlier this year.
Take note that the October 15 release date for Android 15 is exclusive to the Pixel lineup alone, and other smartphone OEMs will take their time in adopting the build. Samsung could announce a One UI 7 update based on Android 15 and release the build later this year or earlier next year with the launch of the Galaxy S25 models.
