AMD's next-generation RDNA 4 flagship is allegedly labeled as the Radeon RX 9070 XT as the red team adopts the Radeon 9000 branding as reported by Chiphell's senior member, Napoleon.

Not 8800 XT & Not 9800 XT, The Next-Gen AMD RDNA 4 Flagship Is Allegedly Called The Radeon RX 9070 XT, New RX 9000 Branding Is Revealed

There have been several rumors and leaks about the AMD RDNA 4 GPU lineup, which will be unveiled at CES 2025 in a few weeks and will enter retail in the first quarter of 2025. According to previous reports, the company was expected to use the Radeon RX 8000 branding and there are also recent rumors which suggested Radeon RX 9000 branding for the lineup.

It is now stated by Chiphell's senior member, Napoleon, that AMD will be going with the Radeon RX 9000 series branding for its next-gen GPUs. Surprisingly, the naming convention will see a bit of a modification. Instead of going with the traditional XX00 route, the new naming scheme will utilize the X0X0 route. So, the successor to the Radeon RX 7700 XT or 7800 XT won't be labeled as 9700 XT or 9800 XT but rather 9070 XT & 9080 XT (hypothesis).

It is also interesting to see AMD going with a naming scheme that somewhat matches that of the NVIDIA GeForce lineup. For example, the RTX 4070 and the upcoming RTX 5070. Now AMD did have the bigger number in the beginning, but we have seen the red team go with bigger numbers in the past too. For example, the AMD Ryzen AI 300 family was initially going to use the Ryzen AI 100 branding but opted for the former due to Intel's Core Ultra lineup which started with 100 and sits at 200 with existing and upcoming solutions. The bigger number does look better in terms of the marketing approach.

The new naming scheme, Radeon RX 9070 XT, also falls in line with the branding of the AMD Strix Halo iGPU which goes up to Radeon RX 8060S. The Radeon 80X0 series is based on the RDNA 3.5 architecture, so it makes sense to go for the Radeon 90X0 branding for the RDNA 4 family.

As for the rest of the rumors, the AMD Navi 48 GPU is expected to be on par with the RTX 4080 in raster and 45% faster than the 7900 XTX in RT performance while consuming lower power. The card will be positioned in the mainstream segment but the Navi 48 lineup will be around $500 US, which is going to make it compete against the RTX 5070, which should be around a similar price point.
