AMD's Radeon RX 9060 XT 8 GB variant has been received by fewer reviewers than its 16 GB counterpart, with Team Red claiming that it is a supply chain move.
AMD's Radeon RX 9060 XT 8GB Model Is More Popular Among Smaller Reviewers — Coincidence? We Hope Not
There has been a deep controversy surrounding the decision of NVIDIA/AMD to introduce GPUs with 8 GB VRAM into the market, given that this figure is said to be insufficient for modern-day AAA titles. More importantly, with NVIDIA and AMD both introducing 8 GB models under the same naming scheme, such as the Radeon RX 9060 XT 8 GB, this has somehow confused the average consumer, who believes that there isn't much of a performance difference between 8GB/16GB models, while performance reviews say otherwise.
Compared to NVIDIA, AMD has been more honest with consumers by shipping out the Radeon RX 9060 XT 8GB units to reviewers, but a priority has been given to the 16 GB model. There's something different about the distribution process this time, mainly since this is the first time Team Red has sold an SKU with multiple VRAM configurations. According to Videocardz, smaller outlets have received the Radeon RX 9060 XT with 8GB VRAM, raising questions about AMD's approach. However, according to official review guidelines shared by LTT, AMD has revealed that the varied distribution is a "supply chain move."
There's no doubt that AMD doesn't want the 8 GB variant to be more focused upon, but it is still great to see the company complying with reviewers, unlike NVIDIA. Based on the initial reviews of the Radeon RX 9060 XT 8 GB variant, it is revealed that the GPU stacks up pretty well against the RTX 5060 8 GB, but discussing performance isn't the point of this post. Limiting access to the 8 GB model to reviewers doesn't give a good impression at all, and the "regional demand" AMD tells us hasn't been the case for any previous GPU release.
Consumers should wait for official reviews to pour in before adopting any of the newer AMD/NVIDIA GPUs, especially the more credible ones. Our review of the RTX 5060 8GB categorizes the GPU as "undeserving," and we hope this isn't the case with the Radeon RX 9060 XT.
